Portland Community College seeks applicants for a full-time tenure-track position in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Candidate Profile

  • Adapts practices and curriculum to include a wide range of cultural knowledge, experiences, and perspectives, especially from historically untapped communities
  • Responds to cultural shifts and changing community support needs through ongoing interrogation of pedagogy and teaching practices
  • Partners and collaborates with internal colleagues and community stakeholders to further embed Culturally Responsive Education in curriculum and departmental practices
  • Be able to advise and connect students to resources to promote student access, retention, and transition
  • Be interested in leading the department and willing to mentor or coach colleagues
  • Be willing to teach the range of ESOL levels and skills
  • Be aware of how one’s privilege, identities, culture, positionality, and power impact students and colleagues
  • Applies instructional expertise and a deep understanding of Culturally Responsive Education theory and praxis to improve the effectiveness of curriculum and instruction
Minimum Qualifications

To be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).
  • Master’s degree in TESOL from an accredited institution,
OR
  • Master’s degree in related field (such as foreign language, linguistics, speech, anthropology, English, adult education, intercultural communication, international studies or other fields upon SAC approval) PLUS proficiency in a foreign language and a TESOL certificate or substantial (40 quarter hours or 30 semester hours) coursework at the 400 level or higher in TESOL methodology from an accredited institution. [TESOL certificate or course work must include the study of linguistics, language acquisition theory, and language teaching methodology. K-12 ELL endorsement is not an appropriate equivalent to or substitute for a TESOL certificate.]
OR
  • Master’s degree in a related field (such as foreign language, linguistics, speech, anthropology, English, adult education, intercultural communication, international studies or other fields upon SAC approval) PLUS proficiency in a foreign language and five years experience in an adult ESL classroom teaching a variety of skills and levels (pre-literate to college) to students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and educational backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least two years of experience teaching a college-level English curriculum to speakers of other languages
Starting Salary Expectations Initial Salary Placement will be up to Step 3 ($62,665) based on related experience, per PCC's collective bargaining agreement. Position Grade Salary Range $58780 to $99564 Annual Salary FTE 1 PCC Benefits

PCC offers a comprehensive benefit package designed to provide employees and their families, including domestic partners, with access to a broad range of benefit options. PCC currently funds the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System (PERS/OPSRP) pension and contributes an additional 6% into the employee's Individual Account Program under PERS/OPSRP. A portion of the 6% will be diverted to The Employee Pension Stability Account as mandated by Senate Bill 1049. PCC offers a tax deferred annuity program and a deferred compensation program where employees may save additional pre-tax dollars for retirement.

Additionally, PCC provides a tuition waiver for courses offered at PCC for yourself, domestic partner, and dependent children under 24 years of age; plus partial tuition reimbursement for yourself at other accredited institutions.

* Please note: Temporary Full-Time Faculty are not eligible for Personal Leave Days, Life Insurance, Long-term Disability, or AD&D Insurance.

Paid Leave:
  • 1 day of sick leave for every 18 days worked (~10 per year)
  • 21 hours of additional personal leave per year
  • 4 paid holidays (which occur during the term you are teaching)

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Instructors shall have earned required academic credentials at a regionally accredited US institution or a foreign institution having the equivalent of regional accreditation.

Instructors with credentials from other countries will have their transcripts evaluated by agencies that have good standing with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services to establish fulfillment of this standard.
