Position Purpose

The Assistant Director of Housing Renewal is responsible for overseeing the management of major capital projects and smaller interior renovations related to Dartmouth’s housing renewal program. Reporting to the Director of Project Management Services, the Assistant Director will directly manage select projects as well as supervise one or two internal or external project managers. The position is responsible for ensuring the successful delivery of capital projects including planning, estimating, budget control, permitting, construction, scheduling, reporting, and problem solving.

Dartmouth’s Campus Services Division is responsible for planning, design, construction and operation of Dartmouth’s buildings, campus landscape and infrastructure. Dartmouth’s facilities include over 5 million square feet of space in 165 buildings. These facilities serve over 5,600 students and 5,000 faculty and staff in a variety of academic, research, administrative, athletic, and residential spaces.

  • Five years of relevant experience in higher education administration and project management.
  • Experience building effective capital programs.
  • Documented success in meeting budget and schedule targets.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (engineering or architecture) or related to construction or project management or the equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with high performance building, landscape design, construction, and standards.
  • Knowledge of utility systems, current energy efficient building systems, and energy conservation best practices
  • Proven organizational, leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to effectively collaborate and interact with all levels of staff, management, and executive leadership.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated ability to critique the status quo and assess consequences of design/configuration decisions on current and future practices.
  • Tact and diplomacy and the ability to handle sensitive situations with confidentiality and discretion.
  • Attention to detail and quality control.
  • Strategic thinking and sophisticated reasoning skills in a highly complex environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; including the ability to synthesize large amounts of complex data for a general audience.
  • Strong planning and time-management skills.

Description

Project Management
  • In consultation with the Director of Project Management Services and appropriate divisional leaders, develops project scope, plans, deliverables, resource requirements and timelines related to the College’s housing needs.
  • Provides strategic direction, identifies and works to resolve conflicts, and manages overall program while assessing and managing exposure and risk on projects.
  • Creates and executes project work plans and revises as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements.
  • Reviews and oversees design documents review to ensure compliance with codes and regulations, College standards, programmatic and performance requirements.
  • Oversees budget development and management of major capital projects, ensuring that needs are effectively met to make the best use of the College’s funds. Ensures that all budget documentation is completed and processed appropriately by each member of the project management team, including contracts, insurance, and billing.
  • Monitors work in progress and oversees construction management and inspection for all capital projects ensuring that work completed is in accordance with the drawings, the College’s guidelines, and applicable codes.
  • Works cooperatively to resolve design and construction conflicts and problems. Analyses problems and develops effective solutions.
  • Ensures project documents are complete, current, and stored appropriately.
  • Proactively engages with the operations team during planning and design to effectively integrate operational and performance needs.
  • Manages external advisors and consultants supporting institutional projects
  • Manages project budgets and provides quarterly updates to aide in financial projections

Staff Management
  • Guides and gives technical and managerial assistance to subordinate employees in the performance of their duties. Collaborates with the Director of Project Management and AVP - FOM to ensure parallel personnel administration policies and objectives among staff.
  • Works with Campus Services Financial Office to ensure appropriate fiscal, procurement, and resource administration within area of responsibility.
  • Serves as a role-model, advocate, and mentor to direct reports and staff. Creates and sustains an environment that fosters teamwork, excellence, respect, accountability and diversity.

Description

Communications and Engagement
  • Ensures that appropriate parties are informed of track and project status, risks, and demands for changes to project scope by coordinating project communications.
  • Develops internal and external communication plans to ensure all stakeholders are informed of key project milestones and decisions.
  • Together with the Associate General Counsel for Facilities and other Campus Services constituents, coordinates submissions to Jurisdictional Authorities for permitting, and ensures compliance with appropriate regulations.
