Syracuse University Libraries’ strategic plan prioritizes the development of its Digital Library Program ( DLP ) in order to enhance the discovery of diverse, multi-format and unique digital materials in its various, digital collections systems. The DLP Core Team (a cross-organizational advisory group which helps form and support the DLP’s goals and objectives) anchors this work alongside the newly-formed Department of Digital Stewardship ( DDS ). The latter works with various Libraries’ stakeholders to create and manage digital collections and objects in the Quartex-based digital collections repository, supports the ingest of original content produced on campus in the Digital Commons-based institutional repository ( SURFACE ), and preserves content for long-term access in its digital preservation system, Preservica.

Under the direction of the Head of the DDS and DLP, the Metadata Strategies Librarian will focus on creating, maintaining, and enriching metadata for digital objects and collections managed by the Libraries. The Metadata Strategies Librarian will also work with cataloging, archival processing, and Libraries’ IT staff to ensure smooth transfer of data between various systems to promote use of unique resources.   • American Library Association-accredited MLIS or equivalent advanced degree and experience
  • Knowledge of a variety of MARC and non- MARC metadata standards and schema
  • Experience in creating, editing and transforming metadata
  • Demonstrated skills with scripting languages and/or tools for data manipulation [e.g.OpenRefine, Python, XSLT (eXtensible Stylesheet Language Transformations)]
  • Understanding of linked data principles, including Resource Description Framework ( RDF ) and ontologies
  • Aptitude for learning new technologies and metadata standards
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills
  • Strong service orientation and interest in library users’ values and needs
  • Excellent communication and analytic skills, including the ability to work well in a team-based environment

Job Specific Qualifications
  • Two to three years of experience working with metadata in a library setting
  • Practical experience in the use of MARC and non- MARC principles, standards and tools
  • Experience creating and/or working with authority data [e.g. Library of Congress authorities, Getty vocabularies, ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor Identifier), International Standard Name Identifiers, etc.]
  • Experience with linked data, semantic web applications, ontologies and RDF
  • Experience migrating and remediating legacy metadata
Responsibilities
Management and Coordination – will contribute to the maintenance of DLP platforms and workflows in the following areas:

Libraries’ Digital Collections
  • Gather feedback from content creators on proposed digital projects.
  • Design, implement, and monitor approved non- MARC (MAchine Readable Cataloging), non- EAD (encoded archival description) projects.
  • Supervise creation of non- MARC, non- EAD metadata; develop, update and maintain metadata application profiles, collection models, object models, and best practices.
  • Assess metadata quality; remediate as needed, working with relevant partners.
Institutional repository (IR or SURFACE )
  • Set up collections within the larger IR framework, develop local collection profiles, and maintain the repository at both the collection and object level.
  • Assess metadata quality, plan enhancements, and remediate as needed to enhance discovery (with the SURFACE team).
  • Coordinate batch loads into the IR (primarily electronic theses and dissertations). Work with the SURFACE team to ensure successful loads and object processes.
  • Enhance discoverability of materials in WorldCat (industry standard meta-catalog) (with the OCLC Digital Collections Gateway and Principal Cataloger).
  • This position may supervise staff/student as needed.
Outreach and Consultation:
  • Foster the Digital Library Program’s goal of Metadata Strategies outreach to better support University-led digital scholarship.
  • Provide metadata support for faculty and students to begin and continue a variety of digital projects.
Digital Library Program ( DLP ) Core Team:
  • Serve as a member of the Core Team, guiding the continued development of the DLP .
  • Give feedback on policy development.
  • Assess proposed digital projects and give feedback on appropriate metadata strategies.
Professional development and service:
  • Monitor and contribute to the development of local, national, and/or international metadata standards and policies. Conduct research and contribute to professional publications and forums.
  • Participate in Libraries¿ working groups and teams outside of ordinary job responsibilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
