Program Coordinator/Scientific Workforce Specialist

Position Summary

The Program Coordinator/Scientific Workforce Specialist position is to support the training grant (T32) Initiative for Maximizing Student Development grant awarded to the University at Buffalo, and the Collaborative Learning and Integrated Mentoring in the Bioscience ( CLIMB ) Program to enhance and develop a diverse and inclusive graduate student and faculty workforce. The incumbent will coordinate and develop all recruitment, educational activities and provide professional development for graduate students in PhD programs in biomedical and behavioral Science and STEM disciplines at UB. Further the incumbent will assume an active role in the integration of education, diversity and inclusion initiatives specifically with the Collaborative Learning and Integrating Mentoring in the Bioscience ( CLIMB ), graduate programs across several UB schools and other such mentoring and professional development programs. Specific job duties include:
  • Managing the day-to-day operations of our professional development graduate IMSD / CLIMB program.
  • Providing academic and community advising to IMSD / CLIMB scholars and designing their individualized curricula.
  • Creating, teaching, and co-directing the professional Development Catalyst Series and organizing/directing Research Communication for Success Workshops, and Grant/manuscript writing workshops.
  • Participating in data collection and long-term outcome evaluations in conjunction with the co-investigators, the graduate programs, and the professional program evaluator.
  • Attending scientific meetings with students and mentors to facilitate networking and maximize students’ exposure to peers and senior scientists, and participating in university outreach efforts.
  • Organizing the annual graduate/undergraduate student Mini symposium.
  • Strategic planning analysis and integration of IMSD / CLIMB activities with existing programs aimed to diversifying the graduate student population at University at Buffalo.
  • Coordinating recruitment and enrolment, and mentoring activities between the IMSD / CLIMB scholars and the participating graduate programs/departments.
  • Coordinate the activities of the CLIMB UP summer program for undergraduates.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in biomedical science, bioscience, neuroscience, and/or behavioral sciences, or related STEM fields, and at least 5 years experience with related educational, administrative projects or programs involving external sponsors.

Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD or MS degree in biomedical, bioscience, neuroscience, and/or behavioral sciences.
  • Mentoring and advising experience with undergraduate and graduate students.
  • STEM Basic research background, as well as familiarity with medical terminology.
  • Experience in interacting/working with individuals from diverse intellectual, ethnic, racial and/or cultural backgrounds.
  • Teaching experience in-person and/or on-line.
  • Excellent organizational and oral/written communication skills.
  • Superior coordination ability, organizational and interpersonal skills, and problem solving.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite including Word and Excel, graphics software (PowerPoint, Publisher and/or others), and excellent ability to communicate using social media.
  • Ability to set up and organize live stream on-line meetings with participants at UB and at other sites.
