Position Description Summary/Purpose :

This position operates a tractor-trailer combination or a truck with a capacity of at least 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW). Setup and breakdown of equipment required. This is a part-time, per diem position.

Essential Job Functions/Primary Responsibilities :

  • Check vehicles to ensure that mechanical, safety, and emergency equipment is in good working order.
  • Follow appropriate safety procedures for transporting goods.
  • Maintain logs of working hours of vehicle service or repair status, following applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Secure cargo for transport, using ropes, blocks, chain, binders, or covers.
  • Set up and break down equipment in trailer.
  • Works a flexible schedule.
  • Conducts all work in a safe manner and all work safety practices are followed.
  • Performs site advance review and logistics for mobile lab operations.
Other Functions :
  • Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.
  • Continues professional development and training; keeps current with trends.
  • Assists other department staff as needed to promote a team effort.
  • Assist with tours, public relations events, fairs and marketing presentations.
  • Conducts demonstrations on mobile lab.
  • Leads workshops for visitors, students and clients.
  • Assists faculty during CE training workshops.
  • Collaborates with faculty and lab techs meeting needs of workshop clients
Knowledge, Ability and Skill :
  • Team player, collaborator, follows directions well, flexible and adaptable
  • Managing one’s own time and the time of others with limited supervision
  • The ability to solve problems and adjust to changing circumstances
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for moving goods by road, including the relative costs and benefits
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, statutes and strategies for operating commercial vehicles in Connecticut
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes stakeholder needs meeting quality standards for services
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repairs, and maintenance
  • Controlling operations of equipment or systems
  • The ability to watch gauges, dials, or other indicators to ensure a machine is working properly
  • Monitoring/assessing performance of one’s self or operations to make improvements or take corrective action
Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience :
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Demonstrated competence in mechanical aptitude.
  • Experience includes a technical/manufacturing background or willing to learn.
Special Requirements :
  • Class A commercial driver’s license.
