Job Summary
Job Summary
Working within the Facilities area and under the general supervision of the Facilities Director in University Housing, the HVAC Mechanic installs, maintains, and repairs environmental control or refrigeration equipment to ensure proper operation of equipment in Sandburg Halls, Purin Hall, Kenilworth Square Apartments, Riverview Hall, and Cambridge Commons. The HVAC Mechanic will ensure building systems and perform preventative maintenance within all 1.2 million square feet of residential and retail space meet the programmatic and energy conservation needs and objectives of each building. The HVAC Mechanics within the University Housing department respond to work orders and should have a basic understanding or desire to learn about (plumbing, electrical issues, basic carpentry). Customer Service and the desire to make residents and our guests experience a place to “love where they live” are our driving principles.

There are two positions open on different shifts. In the applicant questions, please identify the shift(s) you are interested in filling: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 6:00 AM - 4:30 PM; Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday 2:00 PM - 10:30 PM

Job Responsibilities
  • Monitors, tests, maintains, and repairs Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, related equipment, and controls according to established policies and procedures
  • Receives, prioritizes, and responds to service requests according to established timelines and policies
  • Identifies, prioritizes, troubleshoots, and escalates system problems, equipment malfunctions, and repair needs
  • Performs scheduled preventative and routine maintenance and documents activity on equipment and systems to ensure optimal and safe operation
  • Develops and schedules operational work plans for staff occasionally


Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Professional experience in the HVAC trade and/or commercial experience with boilers, chillers, furnaces, and air handlers
  • Ability to work in various environments without adverse physical reaction (e.g., within confined areas; extreme temperature ranges; in hot, noisy, dirty and/or dust-filled areas; at heights in excess of 30 feet, etc.)
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that may require nights, weekends, and holidays as dictated by operational need
  • Ability and desire to perform a wide range of HVAC and Maintenance type work in a residential facility (i.e. simple to complex mechanical problems arise (blown circuit breakers, steam leaks, no heat, flooding toilets)

  • Associate degree or higher from a 2-year college or tech school with a certificate in HVAC and/or similar applicable training as received in a military service school
  • Facility Operating Engineer - 3rd Class License
  • Experience with computerized climate control systems
  • Carpentry experience
  • Plumbing experience
  • Electrical experience
  • Professional experience in a 365/24/7 operation performing HVAC and/or maintenance responsibilities
  • Proficiency with computers and common computer programs (i.e. MS Office suite, email, internet, etc)
