Human Resources Generalist
District Office at 3901 S. State Street
City Colleges of Chicago (CCC), the largest community college system in Illinois, is made up of seven colleges and five satellite sites, providing more than 68,000 students each year access to a quality, affordable education.
Reporting to the Deputy Chief Talent Officer, the Human Resources Generalist performs a broad range of professional HR and operational business activities in support of District Office’s Department of Human Resources and its core areas: talent acquisition and management; compensation design and strategy; HRIS/Payroll; employee services; benefits; and employee performance management.
The Human Resources Generalist also builds relationships with campus HR Departments, working in close collaboration to help facilitate effective communications, problem solving and solution-based outcomes to HR matters; provide guidance on CCC’s HR policies, processes, and procedures; and supports the implementation of district-wide HR initiatives and services. Performs related duties as required.
Your Responsibilities
- Assists in the development and implementation of HR solutions to address the needs of District Office and campuses.
- Communicates and explains to employees CCC’s HR policies, federal employment laws, and state and local employment requirements relating to hiring, employee and labor relations, salary administration, leaves of absence, compliance, and related employment matters.
- Works with District Office HR leadership in developing and revising HR policies and procedures, updating HR documents, and preparing monthly personnel action reports for reporting to the Board of Trustees and in compliance with Board policies.
- Provides support for talent acquisition and management activities, working with campus and District Office HR staff and hiring managers to implement processes to ensure the efficient and effective recruitment, selection, onboarding, development, retention, and transition of highly qualified candidates.
- Provides support for payroll and employee services activities by processing transactions; maintaining files; and participating in the coordination of the new hire process by receiving, reviewing and processing documents.
- Works with District Office HR leadership to address and respond to employee and labor relations issues.
- Prepares reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data and trends as requested, utilizing various HR systems and databases.
- Provides high levels of customer service and confidentiality when responding to inquiries related to HR procedures and policies.
- Provides support for compensation design and strategy, working with managers on position/job analysis, assisting in conducting market pay studies, participating in salary surveys and analyzing compensation data.
- Supports District Office HR leadership in coaching and counseling managers on performance management and HR processes and policies.
- Reviews business processes and recommends and leads HR process improvement initiatives.
- Supports the HR Team as needed while continually fostering and supporting CCC’s mission, vision, and core values.
- Perform other duties as assigned, including participating on special projects.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Human Resources, Business Administration/ Management or a related field.
- Master’s degree preferred
- PHR/SPHR and/or SHRM-CP/SCP desirable
- Three years of work experience in human resources
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state employment laws and regulations
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work within a culturally diverse environment
- Ability to use tact and diplomacy in handling sensitive situations
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
- Familiarity and/or experience working with HR technology/systems such as PeopleSoft HCM highly desirable
- Proficient in use of Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Chicago residency is required for all full-time employees within 6 months of hire.
