Portland Community College seeks 2 full-time instructors. These positions will start in September 2022. We are looking for colleagues who will demonstrate discipline expertise and show sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic backgrounds and abilities of community college students. We welcome applications from instructors who share a commitment to racial justice and intersectionality and who use or are inspired to use anti-racist teaching practices that close equity gaps by recognizing, understanding, and respecting the perspectives of all students. The successful candidate will be qualified to teach introductory courses in Psychology.

Candidate Profile

These qualifications, skills and abilities are critical for success in this position.

In your cover letter, please provide concrete examples of how you meet the minimum qualifications and success criteria. Include a narrative describing how your knowledge, passions, and experiences align with this position.
  • Demonstrates commitment to current and evidence based scientific content, theories, ideas, and a commitment to teaching psychology courses with an emphasis on that scientific approach.
  • Applies instructional expertise and a deep understanding of Culturally Responsive Education theory and praxis, to improve the effectiveness of curriculum and instruction. By praxis we mean the concrete actions undertaken to put ideals into practice with the goal of dismantling systems of power.
  • Demonstrates a deep understanding of intersectionality as an integral part of transformative Culturally Responsive Education.
  • Demonstrates a responsiveness to cultural shifts and changing community support needs through ongoing self-reflective examination of teaching practice, assessments, a willingness to innovate and adapt teaching practices, and take thoughtful risks in the classroom.
  • Demonstrates engagement and collaboration with colleagues to further embed Culturally Responsive Education and practices in curriculum, departmental, and college practices through work on committees, projects, and program development.
Minimum Qualifications

To be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).
  • Master’s degree or higher in Psychology (including all specialized degrees with Psychology in the title of the degree)
OR
  • Master’s degree or higher in Counseling (including specialties in MFT, MFCC, CMF)
OR
  • Master’s degree or higher in a Related Area and c ompletion of 30 quarter-hours of graduate credit in a Psychology or Counseling Department.
Related Area degrees include, but are not limited to:

Cognitive Science

Human Sciences

Neuroscience

Social or Human Ecology

Social Work

Human Development

The list of Related Areas may not be inclusive as there are other degree titles that may be appropriate. The Division Dean, in consultation with the Faculty Department Chair (and/or screening committee), will make a recommendation to the Dean of Instruction about the applicability of a particular degree that is outside the scope of these lists.

Degree must be from an accredited institution.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Commitment to and/or experience working with a wide range of students, including first-generation students, students of color, students who live in poverty, transgender students, students with advanced degrees, and life-long learners
  • Education beyond the minimum qualifications in critical psychology, liberation psychology, community psychology, cultural psychology, feminist psychology, and multicultural psychology
  • Teaching experience with introductory psychology
Starting Salary Expectations Initial Salary Placement will be up to Step 3 ($62,665) based on related experience, per PCC's collective bargaining agreement. Position Grade Salary Range $58780 to $99564 Annual Salary FTE 1 PCC Benefits

PCC currently funds the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System (PERS/OPSRP) pension and contributes an additional 6% into the employee's Individual Account Program under PERS/OPSRP. A portion of the 6% will be diverted to The Employee Pension Stability Account as mandated by Senate Bill 1049. PCC offers a tax deferred annuity program and a deferred compensation program where employees may save additional pre-tax dollars for retirement.

Additionally, PCC provides a tuition waiver for courses offered at PCC for yourself, domestic partner, and dependent children under 24 years of age; plus partial tuition reimbursement for yourself at other accredited institutions.

* Please note: Temporary Full-Time Faculty are not eligible for Personal Leave Days, Life Insurance, Long-term Disability, or AD&D Insurance.

Paid Leave:
  • 1 day of sick leave for every 18 days worked (~10 per year)
  • 21 hours of additional personal leave per year
  • 4 paid holidays (which occur during the term you are teaching)

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Instructors shall have earned required academic credentials at a regionally accredited US institution or a foreign institution having the equivalent of regional accreditation.

Instructors with credentials from other countries will have their transcripts evaluated by agencies that have good standing with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services to establish fulfillment of this standard.
