Portland Community College is seeking a full-time instructor in Communication Studies to be based at the Sylvania Campus. Communication Studies is strategically aligned to the Arts, Humanities, Communication, and Design (AHCD) Pathway. The Program is committed to providing innovative learning opportunities to students. Our courses focus on both theory and practice to help students improve communication competence in a variety of contexts. Communication Studies courses build communication knowledge and skills needed to develop, manage and maintain various types of relationships. Communication Studies welcomes students from diverse backgrounds and abilities to study and develop their skills in preparation for a variety of careers and/or transfer to four-year institutions . This position requires knowledge of foundational areas of communication , including: Public Speaking, Persuasive Speaking, Interpersonal Communication and Intercultural Communication. In addition, the department seeks to incorporate emerging subjects into the curriculum. Communication instructors typically teach four courses per term. PCC is committed to faculty developing professionally and contributing to the continuous improvement of the Communication program and college processes. This includes staying abreast of innovations within the field of Communication and applying this expertise to the improvement of existing courses, identifying potential new courses, and ensuring the program aligns with college curricular standards and practices.

  • Applies instructional expertise and a deep understanding of Culturally Responsive Education theory and practice to improve the effectiveness of curriculum and instruction
  • Responds to cultural shifts and changing community support needs through ongoing interrogation of pedagogy and teaching practices
  • Knowledge of theory and best practices of teaching foundational Communication courses and courses focused on emerging new topics (e.g Health Communication, Social Media, New Media, New Technologies)
  • Ability to teach Communication courses in multiple modalities in addition to face-to-face (e.g. online, remote, hybrid, flex).
  • Ability to work effectively in the development, facilitation, and assessment of a relevant and progressive learner-centered curriculum
  • Demonstrates effective and appropriate skill in communications and human relations in the advising and mentoring of students, inclusive of populations having diverse socio-economic and racial backgrounds, as well as individuals with disabilities
Minimum Qualifications

To be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).
  • Master’s degree in Speech Communication, Communication, Communication Studies
OR
  • Interdisciplinary degrees that include a minimum of 30 graduate credits in Speech Communication
OR
  • Any related Speech Communication Master’s degree (e.g. Telecommunications or Mass Communication) to teach subject-related courses
Starting Salary Expectations Initial Salary Placement will be up to Step 3 ($62,665) based on related experience, per PCC's collective bargaining agreement. Position Grade Salary Range $58780 to $99564 Annual Salary FTE 1 PCC Benefits

PCC offers a comprehensive benefit package designed to provide employees and their families, including domestic partners, with access to a broad range of benefit options. Includes Health, Dental, and Vision options, Group Life, Long-term Disability, Long-term Care, and Auto and Home Insurance programs.

PCC currently funds the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System (PERS/OPSRP) pension and contributes an additional 6% into the employee's Individual Account Program under PERS/OPSRP. A portion of the 6% will be diverted to The Employee Pension Stability Account as mandated by Senate Bill 1049. PCC offers a tax deferred annuity program and a deferred compensation program where employees may save additional pre-tax dollars for retirement.

Additionally, PCC provides a tuition waiver for courses offered at PCC for yourself, domestic partner, and dependent children under 24 years of age; plus partial tuition reimbursement for yourself at other accredited institutions.

* Please note: Temporary Full-Time Faculty are not eligible for Personal Leave Days, Life Insurance, Long-term Disability, or AD&D Insurance.

Paid Leave:
  • 1 day of sick leave for every 18 days worked (~10 per year)
  • 21 hours of additional personal leave per year
  • 4 paid holidays (which occur during the term you are teaching)

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Instructors shall have earned required academic credentials at a regionally accredited US institution or a foreign institution having the equivalent of regional accreditation.

Instructors with credentials from other countries will have their transcripts evaluated by agencies that have good standing with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services to establish fulfillment of this standard.
