Primary Duties
Under the general supervision of the Institutional Repository Librarian, the Digital Collections/Thesis Remediation Specialist is responsible for expanding support for graduate student theses, capstone projects, and other culminating projects to improve the student experience and make the student research output of California State University, Chico more readily discoverable to a global audience. More specifically, the Digital Collections/Thesis Remediation Specialist assists in the process of submitting work to the CSU wide institutional repository-ScholarWorks—making content accessible to users of all abilities and serves to ensure that student works are cataloged and formatted properly. The Digital Collections/Thesis Remediation Specialist also provides metadata and platform support for faculty scholarship, open data sets, and open educational resources in Scholar Works, student and faculty journals hosted on the CSU wide Open Journal Systems platform, as well as university archives resources in Chico Digital Repository. The Digital Collections/Thesis Remediation Specialist will also digitize legacy print materials to create online access.

KNOWLEDGE :
Must possess:
THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Overall library policies and procedures and an in-depth knowledge of library operations, policies and procedures pertaining to assigned functional area(s), and the ability to interpret them, including a solid understanding of individual work functions and the ability to adapt work procedures.
  • External online databases, system and resources, including the ability to perform complex online searches.
  • The institution’s and library’s policies and practices associated with the ethical use of and access to library and online resources including a thorough knowledge of institutional standards pertaining to copyright and intellectual property protection
  • All aspects of lead work direction including assisting in employee selection, training employees in new work procedures, assigning work, organizing work flow and establishing priorities, reviewing work, providing input to performance evaluations and promoting teamwork to optimize effectiveness.
WORKING KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Library terminology and bibliographic formats and structures, including the ability to conduct a simple bibliographic search.
  • Library collection and its organization, as well as classification schemes.
  • Demonstrated expertise in creating, correcting bibliographic records.
  • National standards pertaining to library operations, and the ability to interpret and apply them, as well as explain them to patrons, to ensure compliance.
  • Library accounting and budget procedures and allocation processes, and ability to apply this knowledge to assist in handling vendor accounts and the budget process.
  • Campus human resource practices and payroll procedures.
GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Organizational structure and key functional operations of a library.
  • Full proficiency in all technical aspects of work assignments, including cataloging standards.
  • Knowledge of basic library research methodology and the ability to use it.
SKILLS :
Must possess:
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to be able to prepare internal library reports and written and visual presentations on library resources and present them to library patrons, including students.
  • Strong communication and interpretive skills to be able to interview patrons regarding their Information needs and guide them in the use of more complex library and online resources.
  • Strong organizational skills to oversee and lead work flow in assigned area.
  • Demonstrated expertise in using library automated system(s), especially subsystem(s) pertaining to the functional area, including database maintenance.
ABILITIES :
Must be able to:
  • Quickly learn and use campus library systems, as well as related online catalogs and systems.
  • Use the library system(s) and subsystem(s) module(s) to perform assigned duties.
  • Investigate and research more complex problems, including analyzing and interpreting information.
  • Access various online resources and databases used within the library and to use their standard features to perform technical work and/or assist patrons.
  • Interpret bibliographic records.
  • Interpret library unit’s policies and procedures and apply them accurately in performing work functions, as well as the ability to evaluate procedures and recommend changes.
  • Source and apply institution’s standards pertaining to copyright and intellectual property protection to avoid potential violations.
  • Fully utilize standard and non-standard features of various on-line resources and standard desktop software packages, such as word processing and spreadsheets, to perform technical work or assist patrons.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and research skills to address standard and non-standard work problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to compile and present information in an organized manner.
Required Education and/or Experience
The qualifications listed above would normally be obtained through completion of a high school program, or equivalent certification.
AND
Four years of related Library experience.

Preference may be given to applicants with the following as they may be considered specialized skills:
  • Prior cataloging or metadata production experience, including knowledge of Dublin Core schema.
  • Prior experience with an institutional repository and a digital asset management system such as CONTENTdm.
  • Prior knowledge of digital collections policies and procedures and applicable work methods.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, specifically, Adobe Acrobat and optical character recognition ( OCR ) software.
  • Experience using flatbed, sheet-fed, and overhead scanners.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
lncumbent will need to be able to perform the essential job functions (duties) of this position with or without reasonable accommodation. This position alternates between remaining in a stationary position operating a personal computer for long periods of time and frequently moving about to answer questions and assist patrons. May need to travel across campus to other offices and buildings for meetings and events.
WORK ENVIRONMENT :
Position involves frequent interaction with faculty, staff, and students, as well as alumni. Frequent interaction with other library staff is required. Benefits

Eligibility for standard CSU benefits is based on an appointment of half-time or more for a period exceeding six months. Eligibility for Affordable Care Act ( ACA ) benefits is based on an appointment of at least three-quarter time, hired to work a minimum of 130 hours per month over the course of the appointment or works an average of 130 hours or more per month during the measurement period.
