Web Developer - VCU Online and Continuing and Professional Education



Summary

The position is a Web Developer (IT Developer/Programmer/Sr. IT Developer/Programmer) for VCU Online and Continuing and Professional Education and is a self-driven problem-solver. This position plays a significant role in creating and supporting the spectrum of web content and environments necessary for VCU’s students and faculty to be successful.

Fully remote work is available for the first year with the expectation to evaluate that status after the first year with the option for flexible work arrangements for both on and off campus presence as business needs require.

Typical Duties
  • Lead the development and design of all ALT Lab-related websites working as a part of a cross functional team, and lead the development and design of all ALT Lab/VCU Online websites
  • Develop WordPress plugins and themes that solve problems, contribute to the greater WordPress development community in the spirit of open-source software, and enable new possibilities for our students and the world
  • Develop WordPress plugins and themes to help market and publicize the unit’s programs and address problems for academic users and groups
  • Experiment with other web-based technologies that provide new opportunities for VCU students and faculty, and create and customize accessible learning content in a variety of other systems and formats, including the Canvas LMS and Canvas Catalog
  • Work closely with instructional designers and faculty to build authentic, engaging, and accessible learning experiences
  • Stay abreast of the newest learning technology, web development options, tools, and digital media
  • Work directly with stakeholders in a variety of professional learning settings including individual consultations, informal settings, and formal workshops
  • Create new media and curate existing open educational resources to be used by VCU faculty and students
  • Provide various levels of support for web applications and tools supported by the unit, including the Rampages WordPress multisite installation, PressBooks, Canvas Catalog, and DesignPlus authoring tools
  • Help design, implement, and develop strategies for support, governance, and maintenance for a variety of WordPress-based sites and environments.
Minimum Hiring Standards
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in front-end website design and development using HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Deep expertise and hands-on experience with WordPress, including plugin and theme development and hosting and support
  • Expertise and experience in front-end website design and development using HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Willingness to be a team player who offers energy and enthusiasm
  • A demonstrated desire to innovate and explore new academic technologies
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse entities to coordinate resources and deliver new services
  • Demonstrated project management skills, with the ability to adapt and solve problems proactively and creatively
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, written and teaming skills
  • Proven ability to work as a contributing and collegial member of a team, and to communicate proactively within the team environment
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
Preferred Hiring Standards
  • Graduate degree preferred
  • LAMP Stack hosting experience (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) or experience with other PHP frameworks like Laravel
    Experience creating custom Gutenberg blocks or working with the WordPress REST API
  • Skills with an advanced JavaScript framework like Vue.js or React
  • 3+ years of experience in front-end website design and development using HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Experience working with university faculty and college students
  • Experience with data visualization and other innovative technologies
  • Audio/Video/Visual editing skills
  • Experience working with the Canvas LMS and Canvas REST API, or similar learning management systems
  • Working knowledge of Google Workspace Apps or Google Apps Script

Salary Range: $60,000-$90,000
