Job Description

  • Reporting to the Director of Campus Recreation, this position is responsible for the daily administration and functions related to the operation of the Recreation Center, Rock Climbing Wall, Aquatics programing, special events, member services, and facility management. The position will assist with budget planning and is responsible for financial oversight of operations including, member services, and locker room sales. Additionally, the position will have direct supervision of three full time staff: Recreation Center Manager, Aquatic Center Program Manager, Equipment Mechanic, and part-time student staff.

Facility & Services Management - 30%

  • Cultivate an inclusive learning and working environment through engaged leadership providing direction for professional and student staff who operate and maintain the Recreation Center.
  • Oversee customer service operations related to access control and guest services; administer facility software that includes all in person and online transactions for Campus Recreation related to point of sale, member/participant facility access, program registration, financial reporting, membership database, equipment rental and locker rentals.
  • Coordinate facility repairs and maintenance with central facility services, and monitor, anticipate, and coordinate facility equipment replacement and repair schedules.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, mentor and evaluate the Climbing Wall part-time student staff.

Staff Management - 30%

  • Support the Recreation Center Manager with overseeing daily operations, locker room and membership sales and contracts, monitoring facility and equipment usage, coordinating Informal Recreation activities, conducting inspections, and risk management assessments, developing and implementing systems, and monitor maintenance and repair needs, and serving as the liaison with Purchasing and Contracts and Summer Conferencing.
  • Support and assist the Aquatics Programing Coordinator in providing a comprehensive swimming instruction, lifeguard certification, and leisure swim programming and staff training to ensure compliance with local and federal aquatics policies and standards.

Program Management - 20%

  • Provide on-site coordination of special events, Campus Recreation services, and climbing wall programs and training: arrange services, coordinate set-up and take-down, provide event supervision, technical support, and evaluation, operate equipment, and work with event sponsors in planning and conducting events.
  • Provides direction and support for Member Services functions to include, the POS solution (FUSION), Customer Service, Alumni Relations, Informal Recreation and Special Events.
  • Serve as the liaison with Facility Services for custodial and maintenance needs for the Recreation and Aquatic facilities.

Fiscal Operations & Capital Projects - 15%

  • Assist with the developing and coordination of capital improvement projects, permanent equipment purchases and equipment installations and repairs.

Other - 5%

  • Serve in a back-up role for other positions within Campus Recreation work on special projects and perform other tasks as assigned.
  • Serve as a departmental essential staff member, working during university emergencies and/or closures when required.

Typical Working Conditions

  • Occasional use of sports and mechanical equipment.
  • Occasional outdoor activity and exposure to all weather conditions.
  • May work around or use chemicals. May work around electrical and mechanical hazards.
  • Exposure to heights. Frequent use of sport and fixed equipment, tools, and University lift training.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in higher education administration, recreation administration, sport management, recreation and leisure studies, student affairs, or comparable degree AND
  • At least three years of related experience with two years of supervisory experience.
  • Two years managing or supervising in a recreation program or facility in higher education.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in higher education administration, recreation administration, sport management, recreation and leisure studies, student affairs, or comparable degree.
  • Direct personnel management experience of campus recreation program/facility student staff: recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating, and disciplining.
  • Two years direct management of a climbing wall facility and supervision of climbing wall staff.
  • Two years budget management experience.
  • Direct personnel management experience of full-time/career staff: hiring, training, and evaluating
  • Budget development experience.
  • Experience with fundraising and donor relations.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills such as teaching, developing/delivering presentation content/materials, writing reports, proposals, professional correspondence, manuals, etc.
  • Experience programming or service delivery for diverse community populations.
  • Experience coordinating aquatics programing and services.
  • Experience with designing, implementing, and analyzing student learning outcome assessments and utilizing results to inform area planning
