Job Summary

Rhode Island School of Design is looking for a Non-Clinical Case Manager to join its Student Affairs Office. This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled Case Manager to provide guidance and support to our students in resolving educational and personal challenges that may impede their academic progress. The successful candidate has demonstrated cross-cultural competency and a commitment to advancing the principles of social equity and inclusion, environmental and climate justice, and equal access to resources and opportunities.

The Non-Clinical Case Manager is responsible for providing guidance and facilitation to assist students in optimizing their educational experience while minimizing the impact of personal distress on their education. This position coordinates care, interventions, and social support with appropriate referrals and follow-up services within a broad network of campus and community resources. In collaboration with Student Affairs and other campus staff, the incumbent in this position provides a safe, welcoming, accessible, and affirming environment for all RISD students. Under the direction of the Assistant Dean of Student Support and Administration (or designee), the Non-Clinical Case Manager provides non-clinical case management and support for students in crisis or students with complex psychosocial needs.

The Student Affairs Office serves as a general advocate for all RISD students. The Non-Clinical Case Manager will join a dedicated team of professionals in providing opportunities, programming, and services that reflect the values of community, inclusiveness, responsibility, leadership, and well-being.

Essential Functions
  • Provide guidance and support to students in resolving educational and personal challenges that may impede their academic progress. Provide students with solution-focused assessments, including information, resources, and support to aid in their academic and personal success. Coordinate and recommend services for students, coordinating case management between the VP of Student Affairs, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) providers, Health Services (SHS) practitioners, Office of Disability Services staff, the Office of Conduct and Compliance, Public Safety, and Residential Life staff.
  • Educate the campus community on intervention and referral process. Advise students who are referred or self-referred to the office due to emotional or social concerns. Serve as a resource regarding academic or psychosocial concerns or options and escalate or refer to advisor or appropriate department.
  • Collaborate in providing support to students in distress by triaging concerns, assessing urgency and scope, and coordinating a response from the college community in accordance with policies and procedures as needed. Oversees on-going support, outreach, and follow up with the college community.
  • Design follow up plans by actively engaging other student affairs staff, department heads, and faculty, and by helping to highlight and resolve items related to academic considerations during hospitalizations. Communicate next steps with families, staff, department heads, faculty and staff as necessary.
  • Chair the CARE Network committee and oversee CARE Network training, in conjunction with the Assistant Dean for Student Support and Administration. Serve on the Threat Assessment Team.
  • Manage appropriate risk associated with student behavioral issues. Communicate with parents when appropriate.
  • Serve as emergency on-call case manager on a rotation basis.
Knowledge/Skills/Experience
  • Experience collaborating with mental health professionals on case management, knowledge of student advocacy, crisis management and risk and liability management
  • Must demonstrate experience and commitment to the values of access, equity, inclusion and diversity in higher education
  • Excellent verbal, writing and presentation skills
  • Must be able to communicate and interact effectively with students, faculty, staff and all external constituencies and to build and foster positive relationships, demonstrating respect and inclusivity
  • Strong computer skills including MS Word, Excel, student information databases, and Internet or web-based applications
  • Ability to maintain composure in a fast paced, dynamic, and demanding environment
  • Master's degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, psychology, counseling, education or related field preferred
  • Three-five years in higher education managing students in crisis
Valued but not required skills and experience:
  • Experience with student conduct and residential populations in a small college or university setting preferred
  • Appreciation for art and design, developed through employment, education or personal interest, highly desirable
