Position Information

This is a full-time, permanent (probationary) position.

Special Working Conditions: Hours may vary from semester to semester, and may include evening hours.

The salary range for this classification is: minimum $3,565 - maximum $6,187 monthly.

Major Duties

Under general supervision of the Dean, College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences (CNBS), the incumbent performs comprehensive support services by providing materials, supplies, equipment and related technical and logistical support to a variety of upper and lower division laboratory courses for the Psychology Department. Activities also include but are not limited to making recommendations to students in APA formatting and coordinating outside services with other departments when necessary. Must be available to assist students and faculty during laboratory, activity, and testing courses. Duties may vary from statistician and APA formatting consultation for students to equipment maintenance and repair.

Qualifications

Experience:
Equivalent to two years of experience providing instructional support services for a unit or discipline, acting as a student assistant, or in producing materials or supplies related to the discipline.
or
Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
or
Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a related discipline may be substituted for the experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred Education: B.A./B.S. in Psychology or related position, or currently enrolled (or has already earned) a M.A./M.S. in Psychology or related discipline.

Preferred Experience: Experience as a Lab Assistant in Psychology laboratory courses; Experience in placing orders via Peoplesoft; Familiarity with the lower and upper division courses taught by the Psychology Department.

Preferred Knowledge and Abilities:
Ability to:
- Serve as a statistical consultant for students and help students interpret SPSS results
- Provide students with support in APA style
- Organize groups in coordination with other departments
- Maintain psychology subject pool
- Plan activities and prepare schedules

Knowledge of
- Statistical techniques to analyze data; knowledge of APA style.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of :
- Principles of providing support services
- Common principles, methods, and techniques related to the discipline
- Materials, supplies and equipment and their uses related to the discipline

Ability to:
- Evaluate, maintain, and order materials and supplies used for lab and activity courses (e.g., audio-visual equipment)
- Maintain small group rooms
- Score and process psychological test protocols for MA Psychology activity courses
- Make minor repairs on scientific equipment
- Operate scientific or highly technical equipment
- Use methods, techniques and skills related to the discipline in preparing specialized materials.

The position activities may require the use of the following equipment, machinery, tools, vehicles or office equipment: computer equipment (hardware and software), psycho-physiological measuring devices, social psychology experimental equipment/mechanisms, printers, and cloud-based storage systems (e.g., Dropbox and Google Drive).

Responsibilities

50% - Laboratory set-up and maintenance

Setup laboratories and classrooms for student use and assist instructors in classroom laboratory as needed. Oversee student assistants when necessary. Give demonstrations and instruct students and faculty in operation of equipment. Contact faculty in advance regarding equipment needed for classroom work and ascertain that equipment required for instruction is available and in working order.

35% - Oversee Psychology stock room, keep accurate records and inventory, maintain all equipment in working order and in a condition of ready availability, easy access, and adequate security for faculty instructional and/or research usage. This includes:

- Adequate maintenance and repair of equipment including major overhaul and occasional modification, fabrication, or construction of equipment. Maintain an up-to-date library of equipment

- Keeping stock records and inventory of equipment, tests and supplies. Order parts, supplies and equipment using requisition and checking with vendors as to availability.

- Performing periodic security checks to make sure equipment and supplies are fully secured from theft.

- Giving technical advice regarding equipment operation, selection and purchase

10% - Provide statistician consultation for students. Activities also include making recommendations for students with regards to the adherence of APA formatting in papers submitted within the psychology department. Facilitation of knowledge in research methods, statistics, and APA formatting in cooperation with faculty. Determines when outside services are necessary and arranges for such services (e.g., TLC and PEGS-GWIE).

5% - Other duties as assigned.
