Mental Health Counseling

JOB SUMMARY:

The Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The assistant professor will have strong knowledge of counseling, assessment, and research methods. Applicants for this position must have a PhD by August 2022 and will begin teaching in fall 2022.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Candidates will be expected to teach courses primarily in the Mental Health Counseling program. As a core faculty member of the program, the candidate will be expected to teach clinical courses in counseling, psychopathology, assessment, and, if needed, develop a course in his/her area of expertise.
  2. Advising and mentoring students are required, as well as providing service to the school and university as determined by the Dean.
  3. Establish and maintain an active research program. Candidates will publish theoretical or empirical research in top-tier journals. In addition, candidates will demonstrate strong interest in guiding student thesis research in the Mental Health Counseling and General Psychology programs, if needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Candidates must have completed a Ph.D. in clinical/counseling psychology or counselor education. A doctoral degree in psychology must be from an APA-accredited program.
  2. Candidates should be licensed or licensed-eligible in New York State.
  3. Candidates must be able to integrate their clinical experience, scholarship, teaching, and service, as well as collaborate with interdisciplinary faculty of counselors, psychologists, and psychoanalysts.
  4. The successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to the mental health counseling profession and psychology through relevant professional memberships (e.g., APA, ACA, or related regional associations in the field of psychology, counseling, and counselor education), professional development activities, service/advocacy, and scholarly work.
  5. Priority will be given to individuals with teaching experience in the following areas: psychopathology, assessment, counseling practice, diversity/social justice, or in specialty areas such as substance use disorders, child/adolescent psychotherapy, or forensics.
