Department Summary
The Department of Romance Languages is part of the newly formed School of Global Languages and Studies of the College of Arts and Sciences. It is a diverse, multicultural, and plurilingual academic unit that researches and instructs in French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish languages and literatures. It is the largest foreign language department at the University of Oregon and frequently intersects with other departments and colleges on campus. The department sponsors and supports numerous activities such as lectures, film festivals, study abroad programs, international conferences, and community events. Romance Languages is committed to principles of social justice as a core aspect of our curriculum and departmental culture.

Position Summary
The University of Oregon's Department of Romance Languages invites applications for two non-tenure-track Career Instructors of Spanish. Competitive applicants will be capable of outstanding teaching at all undergraduate levels, with a focus on beginning and intermediate Spanish in a university curriculum. We are especially interested in practitioners/teachers who will enhance the department's existing strengths in content-based instruction, assessment, and Spanish heritage language pedagogy.

Career Instructors of Spanish teach 9 courses per academic year (3 per term) primarily at the lower division (100-200).

Instructors will engage in professional development and current research related to Spanish applied linguistics and/or second-language teaching methodologies. They will also collaborate closely in a multi-sectioned program with other career instructors and Graduate Employees.

We welcome applications from candidates who are from populations historically underrepresented in the academy, and/or who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.

Minimum Requirements
  • M.A. in Spanish or related field in hand by time of appointment.
  • Professional-level proficiency in Spanish and English

  • A commitment to working collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds and across department programs

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated commitment and contribution to institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Active connection with research and professional organizations
  • ACTFL OPI certification and expertise in ACTFL and/or CEFR guidelines
  • Expertise in other Romance languages (French, Italian, and/or Portuguese)
