Lecturer of Computer Science

Oglethorpe University seeks applications for its Lecturer of Computer Science position. We view this as a long-term position, with an initial three-year contract and an option for renewal upon favorable review.

Minimum qualifications are a Ph.D. or equivalent in Computer Science, Computer Science Education, or a closely related field.  Applicants should also have a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as a demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring students of diverse backgrounds.  Applications submitted by February 15th will receive full consideration. Applications will be reviewed until an offer is accepted.

Candidates should be comfortable teaching across the spectrum of undergraduate computer science courses, including introduction to programming, data structures, computer organization, software engineering, and object-oriented design group projects. In addition to the lower-division and upper-division courses that support the STEM program at Oglethorpe, Division IX members teach in the Core program through the regular offering of Mathematics and Human Nature, a required course for all undergraduates. The ability to teach courses in mathematics or actuarial science would be welcomed.

Service to the university is required for this position, which likely will primarily be assisting the Division in designing and implementing a computer science major.  But it may also take the form of advising students and serving on committees. There is no research expectation.

The hire will have access to professional growth funds for membership dues to professional organizations, travel to regional conferences, purchase of software, and other approved expenditures. Additional funds are available by application to support activities such as speaking at conferences or attending workshops.  

About the Division of Mathematics and Computer Science: 

The successful candidate will join six faculty as a contributing member of Division IX – Mathematics and Computer Science. Division IX strives to provide a collegial, egalitarian, supportive, and healthy work environment. As such, the new candidate can expect that members of Division IX will happily provide mentorship and support (e.g. course materials, guidance on performance reviews, etc.) in the transition to a new work environment, especially Dr. Patterson, our Computer Science program coordinator. Additionally, the new hire will have input into matters concerning Division IX, such as curriculum development, promotion of our disciplines across campus, development of new tracks and related majors, and program assessment.

In addition to the lower and upper-division courses that support the Computer Science Major/Minor and STEM programs at Oglethorpe, Division IX members teach in the Core program through the regular offering of Mathematics and Human Nature - a required course for all undergraduates.
