Job Description:

APPOINTMENT: August, 2022

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The associate faculty will teach in the Outdoor Leadership program located on Western Illinois University's Macomb campus.

TEACHING: Provide quality instruction in the Department's core course sequence and teach introductory and upper division undergraduate and graduate professional courses in the Recreation, Park and Tourism Administration (RPTA) program. Provide supervision for undergraduate and graduate internships or projects.

SERVICE: Participate in faculty meetings and departmental activities. Serve on Department, College, and/or University Committees and contribute to professional organizations. Mentor majors regarding general career options and professional matters.

Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate must have an earned Master's degree from a regionally accredited degree granting institution of higher education (or equivalent from an international accrediting body), in the area of recreation, parks, leisure studies, tourism, or related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Demonstrated teaching excellence at the college level in outdoor leadership and/or resource management, recreation administration, and relevant professional experience in 1) outdoor leadership program design and management in diverse outdoor settings, 2) outdoor expedition leadership or instruction, 3) teaching outdoor recreation classes, immersive field work or travel workshops, or 4) outdoor-related certifications (Wilderness First Responder) or active affiliation with a professional association.

THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Administration (www.wiu.edu/rpta) at Western Illinois University holds NRPA accreditation and is housed in the College of Education and Human Services. The RPTA Department has 67 undergraduate majors and 21 full-time graduate students. It is comprised of nine full-time tenure track positions along with associate faculty and part-time instructors. Three full time faculty members serve at the Quad Cities campus, and six full time faculty members serve at the Macomb, IL campus. The Department administers the 92-acre Horn Field Campus. The RPTA department at Western has a long history of collaborations among faculty members that have contributed to our growth and strength as a department and in our college. The department seeks to hire new faculty that will add and complement our diversity of knowledge and who will participate fully in the continued growth and health of the program.

THE UNIVERSITY: Since 1902, Western Illinois University has provided outstanding educational opportunities to individuals in west central Illinois and well beyond our region and state. WIU's traditional residential campus in Macomb, Illinois, is the educational, cultural and athletic center of the region, while the WIU-Quad Cities non-residential branch campus in Moline, Illinois, is the only public university in the immediate Quad Cities region.

Western is a comprehensive university offering 62 undergraduate and 41 graduate degree programs, which includes an Ed.D. in educational leadership and a Ph.D. in environmental science. With a student-to-faculty ratio of 13:1, the University's 442 full-time faculty members teach 94 percent of all undergraduate and graduate courses.

WIU-Macomb, IL: A traditional, residential four-year campus with distinctive undergraduate degrees and numerous graduate programs, including a doctorate in education, WIU-Macomb is located in the heart of west central Illinois in Macomb (population 20,000). Macomb is an Amtrak city with twice-daily service to Chicago.

WIU-Quad Cities: The only public university in the Quad Cities area, WIU-QC offers select undergraduate and graduate programs, including a doctorate in education and a doctorate in environmental studies, at its non-residential campus in Moline, IL (population 44,000).

WIU's Macomb campus is the educational, cultural and athletic center of the region. Annually, 12 major theatrical and dance productions and studio shows are performed, along with outstanding concerts, lectures, presentations, films, dance performances and more. The Gwendolyn Brooks and Casa Latina cultural centers offer programs and activities focusing on Black and Hispanic cultures, while the Women's Center promotes gender equity through education, support and advocacy. WIU's student organization for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning and ally (LGBTQ*A) community provides resources, support and programming. These cultural and resource centers promote WIU's goal of enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion through educational programming and advocacy.

The University's athletics program, based on the Macomb campus, sponsors 17 NCAA Division I intercollegiate men's and women's varsity sports. Football competes in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision through the Missouri Valley Football Conference; all other varsity sports compete at the Division I level through The Summit League.
