Stephen F. Austin State University seeks applications for chair of the Department of Physics, Engineering and Astronomy. The ideal candidate will have:
- Terminal degree in one of the fields within the academic department and sufficient experience to warrant a tenured appointment
- Strong record of research and other scholarly achievements
- Experience in academic leadership and administration
- Commitment to working with interdisciplinary teams
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and to effectively recognize and resolve conflicts and mediate disputes
- Experience in supporting and mentoring undergraduate students in research projects
- Experience building and maintaining strong relationships with alumni and with industry, community and college/university stakeholders
- Ability to recruit, develop, and retain a diverse pool of students, faculty and staff
- Experience with program assessment and accreditation
This is a full-time, 11- or 12-month, faculty position responsible for serving as the chief administrator of an academic department or academic school while exemplifying those faculty qualities most valued by the academic community: teaching excellence, scholarly and creative activities, and a commitment to university and community service. Responsible for the development and implementation of department, college and university policy; setting the tone of the academic department through daily interaction with colleagues and departmental staff; and serving as advocate for the department’s needs to the administration and an interpreter of administrative policy to faculty and students. The chair/director is an administrator, whose performance has a fundamental impact on the success of the institution in attaining its specific goals. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the dean.

Stephen F. Austin State University is located in Nacogdoches, Texas, in the East Texas Pineywoods region, 140 miles northeast of Houston and 165 miles southeast of Dallas.
