Position Summary

Southeast Missouri State University invites applications for the position of Controller. The Controller reports to the Assistant Vice President for Financial Services and serves as the chief accounting officer of the University. This position is responsible and accountable for the day-to-day operations of the Controller's Office. The Controller has oversight for all accounting, reporting and compliance issues. This position oversees the following areas: accounting services including all financial operations, grant accounting and compliance, treasury management, and some budget functionality.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Direct and supervise the accounting to achieve departmental and university goals
  • Provide financial and analytical support to senior management
  • Monitor, maintain, and enhance the internal and external financial reporting functions
  • Coordinate and oversee all components of the University and Foundation annual external audit
  • Prepare financial statements for the University, coordinate year-end closing transactions, and serve as the primary liaison with the external audit team
  • Develop and maintain a system of internal controls and financial policies
  • Monitor and review grant budgets and ensure compliance with grant regulatory requirements
  • Maintain general ledger and all ancillary transactions
  • Manage cash and investments
  • Manage debt service obligations
  • Oversee preparation of University tax returns and 1099's


  • Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting; MBA and/or CPA or CMA license a plus
  • At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in higher education financial management with direct responsibility in areas of fiscal analysis, asset management, budget, accounting and financial reporting
  • At least 3 years experience in grant accounting or auditing
  • At least 3 years experience supervising professional staff
  • Knowledge of current and changing accounting requirements and regulations such as that outlined by the FASB and GASB; Experience in GASB financial statement presentation a plus
  • Experience in financial statement presentation
  • Experience using complex computerized accounting systems and ERP systems
  • Proven ability to plan and execute within larger organizational priorities and communicate effectively with a wide variety of people from all aspects of the organization
  • Proficiency using spreadsheets, database, and data extraction utility applications
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of customer service
  • Demonstrated commitment to a diverse work environment, including working with multi-cultural populations and an understanding of, and sensitivity to, issues affecting women and minorities
