The Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) program at Sichuan University-Pittsburgh Institute (SCUPI) invites applications for multiple positions in the Digital Humanities (such as, New Media, Digital Culture, Video Game Studies, Digital Design, Computational Social Sciences), to begin Fall 2022. We are seeking candidates who can contribute to our new Digital Narrative and Interactive Design (DNID) major, which offers students an innovative and interdisciplinary curriculum that combines courses in media literacy and criticism, digital composition, and transmedia storytelling with courses in programming, data visualization/analytics, user-centered design, and software development. We are especially interested in candidates whose research and pedagogical experiences involve developing and implementing digitally-based projects, which mobilize and augment critical inquiries rooted in methodologies of the humanities or social sciences, that might incorporate digital archives/curation, geographical information systems, cultural analytics, digital ethnography, social simulation models, or multimodal composition.
RANK AND COMPENSATION
The opening is for multiple full-time faculty positions. Rank and
compensation will depend on qualifications. Terms of employment,
including salary, relocation, and start-up package are competitive
and on par with those offered by U.S. universities or their
affiliated units in China.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Contribute to the developments of academic programs related to DNID and HSS
- Classroom teaching of undergraduate courses in DNID and related areas
- Advise DNID student projects
- Maintain an active research agenda
- Performing general service responsibilities associated with academic settings of higher education in the US and China
- REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Ph.D. in Digital Humanities, Composition & Rhetoric, English, Media Studies, or in a relevant field with a specialization in (but not limited to) digital media and culture, humanities/social sciences computing, GIS, new media, interactive platforms, game design, and education technology.
- An established scholarly agenda in humanistic/social science studies with a demonstrated engagement with digital methods
- High level of English proficiency
- Flexibility and ability to work with others in a collaborative, dynamic environment
- DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience teaching digital humanities courses to undergraduate students and/or a strong record of publications in digital humanities or related fields
- Academic writing teaching experience
- Familiarity with curriculum and course development
- Interest in developing innovative courses and pedagogical approaches in the Humanities and Social Sciences for both DNID students and the institute’s broader STEM community

Sichuan University - Pittsburgh Institute (SCUPI) is an
undergraduate EMI (English as Medium of Instruction) institute
formed in cooperation between Sichuan University and the University
of Pittsburgh. Located in Chengdu, China, SCUPI is one of the
institute-scale, collaborative entities between leading
universities in the U.S. and China. The undergraduate program in
STEM offers three majors in Industrial Engineering (IE), Mechanical
Engineering (ME), and Materials Science and Engineering (MSE),
following the core curriculum offered at the University of
Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering. The SCUPI Humanities
and Social Sciences (HSS) program supports SCUPI’s educational
vision by offering courses that build students’ critical and
creative thinking as well as providing students with global
perspectives. HSS houses the SCUPI Writing Center, which offers
required writing and language courses, in addition to providing
academic support for SCUPI’s EMI environment. With the addition of
the new Digital Narrative and Interactive Design (DNID) major,
which corresponds with a similar offering at the University of
Pittsburgh through a collaboration between the Dietrich School of
Arts & Sciences and the School of Computing & Information,
SCUPI expands its goals of preparing students to contribute to how
their generation not only transforms our material environments and
processes but also transforms the stories that shape our cultural
worlds.
