The Opportunity:

The Department of Chemistry at Colorado School of Mines invites applications for an anticipated 3 year temporary (with the possibility of renewal) full-time Teaching Professor at the assistant professor level. This is a 9-month non-tenure track position with possibility of additional summer teaching. We seek candidates excited to share in our mission of addressing the challenges of a sustainable global society by educating the next generation of leading scientists and engineers by expanding the frontiers of knowledge through student centered learning. The Department emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to solving real-world problems in areas such as sustainability, alternative fuels and energy, biodetection, materials, nanomedicines and water quality assessment.

Responsibilities:

  1. Work effectively in a collegial, collaborative, interdisciplinary academic environment both within the Department and across the Mines campus
  2. Participate and teach in General Chemistry curriculum innovations and improvements
  3. Coordinate multi-section laboratory courses (including supervision and training of teaching assistants) 
  4. Contribute to the diversity, inclusion and excellence of our academic community through their teaching

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Possess a graduate degree in Chemistry with a Ph.D. preferred.
  2. Experience teaching in general chemistry courses with in-person laboratory section.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience designing and implementing lab curricula
  2. Experience in project-based and/or active-learning pedagogy 
  3. Experience in the coordination of multi-section labs
  4. Experience in teaching courses in a collaborative team environment
  5. Experience with the development and presentation of online chemistry courses
  6. Experience with mentoring students

Experience engaging students with diverse academic backgrounds in instructional settings

The Department of Chemistry comprises 5 teaching faculty and 16.5 tenure/tenure track faculty, as well as research faculty and support staff, 86 undergraduate and 96 graduate students.

The Chemistry faculty tend to work collaboratively and successful candidates are expected to interact with multiple faculty members in the department and across Mines campus, particularly, departments that teach core classes. To maintain a student-centric approach to teaching and be cognizant of students’ academic and personal goals, successful candidates will work closely with Mines Trefny Innovative Instruction Center, Center for Academic Services and Advising (CASA), and Disability Support Service. Pay Range 

Mines is offering an academic year salary of $61,578 - $63,165

Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
