The University
Founded in 1876, the University of Oregon (UO) is a Carnegie R1 Research University, and the state's flagship campus. It enrolls more than 20,000 undergraduate and 3,700 graduate students representing all 50 states and 99 countries, and is an integral economic driver for the state, with an estimated $2.2 billion annual economic return to Oregon. UO offers 316 undergraduate and graduate degree programs through its nine academic units: the Robert D. Clark Honors College, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Charles H. Lundquist College of Business, the College of Design, the College of Education, the School of Journalism and Communication, the School of Law, the School of Music and Dance, and the Graduate School.

In recognition of the quality of its teaching and research, UO is also one of 66 members (64 U.S. and 2 in Canada) of the Association of American Universities, and one of only two AAU universities in the greater Northwest. Although similar to its fellow AAU members in the quality of its research and teaching, UO's character is distinctly different - smaller, more intimate in educational experience and with a research profile that has always been highly multidisciplinary.

Since 2014, UO has operated under an independent governing structure that supports its ability to chart new directions, improve entrepreneurial activity, and invent creative programming. Since then, the University has raised over $3.2 billion in support of partnerships and opportunities in academic, research and innovation excellence. Recent efforts include new initiatives focused on the environment, innovation and entrepreneurship, sport and wellness, and diversity, as well as an interdisciplinary data science initiative.

The University of Oregon places a high priority on growing a diverse and inclusive community in which faculty, students and staff can thrive. About 34% are students of color and more than half are women. Approximately half of the student body comes from outside the state including a substantial international population. The greater UO community includes more than 220,000 living alumni.

The University's beautiful campus sits on 295 acres in Eugene, Oregon. In addition to the main campus in Eugene, the University operates other programs and facilities across the state, including the University of Oregon Portland Center, Pine Mountain Observatory in Central Oregon, and the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology in Charleston. The University sponsors a wide selection of innovative undergraduate research, academic outreach and service-learning experiences and offers study abroad programs and internship opportunities in 95 countries.

The University of Oregon is located in the Willamette Valley, a picturesque region known for its excellent wines, abundant recreational opportunities, and outdoor activity, and marked by a progressive, collaborative culture. It sits on 295-acres and features state-of-the-art facilities in an arboretum-like setting. Eugene is a vibrant and growing metropolitan area of over 200,000 located two hours from Portland, and five hours from Seattle with varied cultural and culinary offerings, a pleasant climate, and a community highly engaged in environmental and social concerns. It hosts several world-class museums and cultural centers, including the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, the Museum of Natural and Cultural History, and the Many Nations Longhouse; and is home to a 12,000-seat indoor arena that attracts nationally known entertainers, plus several smaller performance venues. Eugene is also a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts - skiing, hiking, fishing, rafting, cycling and running are popular pastimes in Eugene.

The Opportunity
The University of Oregon, one of the world's leading academic and research institutions, is seeking an outstanding individual with strategic vision, technical acumen, and strong communication and interpersonal skills to serve as its Vice Provost & Chief Information Officer (CIO). The CIO provides vision, leadership, oversight, and management of the University's information technology services, infrastructure, hardware and software. The CIO is an integral part of ensuring UO can leverage technology to promote excellence in innovation, research and academics.

The CIO reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President and serves on the President's Senior Leadership Team. In addition, the CIO leads and provides oversight and recommendations for the IT governance structure and approach on campus, in addition to serving as co-chair of the IT Steering Committee, which serves to advise the Provost on IT policies, priorities, and performance, as well as funding allocations.

The CIO will join the UO community at an exciting moment in time. While IS was a legacy operation until 2017, a then-new Chief Information Officer transformed IS into a vastly improved, modernized and high-performing function. Substantive improvements in IS over the past five years have included successful major initiatives in operational excellence; innovation; strategy; cybersecurity; and diversity, equity and inclusion. The Chief Information Officer we seek will continue and renew the exciting progress of IS into the future.

Additionally, the University has made tremendous investments in teaching and research excellence in the most recent years, including the construction and development of the $1 billion Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact, a new campus designed to accelerate the cycle of moving discoveries to impacts for the greater good. Rooted in the UO's 60-year history of interdisciplinary collaboration, the Knight Campus has already hired 13 new faculty and is actively training a new generation of scientists, forging tighter ties with industry and entrepreneurs, and creating new opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students.

The Chief Information Officer assumes critical technology responsibilities for all of campus and directly leads the Information Services (IS) unit. IS is the central information technology unit at the University of Oregon. Its focus is to provide campus-wide IT strategies and services that will contribute to the success of the University as an intellectual community and facilitate preeminence in research and academics.

The CIO works across all departments on campus with faculty, administrators, staff, and students as well as with the Board of Trustees, vendors, and other partners. The CIO leads 200+ university-wide IT professionals in the areas of strategic planning, research and technology services support, enterprise resource planning, business process management, information security, web services, and business continuity planning and emergency preparedness.

The CIO is responsible for the planning and execution of an information technology vision and strategy that aligns with the University's educational and research missions and growth plans in both the short-term and over a longer time horizon.
