Director of the UVM Career Center (Posting #S3306PO)

The University of Vermont seeks an experienced and innovative career development professional who will implement our vision of a thriving career ecosystem within an equity and inclusion framework. The successful candidate will advance the Center’s goals by building and leading a shared vision for integrated, experientially-based career exploration and preparation. The Director will have the necessary skills to implement, evaluate and communicate the impact of our career-centered initiatives and data-informed actions that promote excellent campus and post-graduation outcomes.

Founded in 1791, the University of Vermont is one of the nation’s oldest institutions of higher education. Located in the city of Burlington overlooking scenic Lake Champlain, UVM attracts over 10,000 undergraduates and 3,000 graduate, medical, and continuing education students from throughout the United States and the world, while still fulfilling its land-grant mission serving Vermont communities. It is comprised of seven undergraduate schools and colleges, an Honors College, a College of Medicine, and an active and growing Professional and Continuing Education unit.

Our dynamic Career Center serves and connects students, alumni, academic partners, and employers. The staff provide direct services to students, connect with employers and experiential learning partners, and develop resources to foster faculty and staff engagement with student career development. The next Director will work with senior leaders across academic and administrative units as well as affiliated (e.g., UVM Foundation, UVM Medical Center) and external partners, with the goal of systematically weaving career exploration and preparation throughout students’ UVM academic and co-curricular experience. The Director will lead a highly qualified staff as they expand opportunities for internships, micro-internships, job shadowing, and enhanced connections with UVM’s extensive alumni network.

The successful candidate will understand and employ effective technological solutions, measure and communicate impact, both qualitatively and quantitatively, and pursue strategies that ensure equity and inclusion.

Reporting directly to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Student Success, the Director will manage a staff of 13, and provide strategic oversight for a budget of more than one million dollars, including developing plans for staffing, income-expense activities, and donor development. Responsibilities include strategic and budgetary planning, championing career exploration and preparation goals within the institution, and serving as a resource and partner for senior leaders seeking to improve career outcomes through targeted programs.

Qualifications include:

  • Five or more years of higher education experience with career services and/or career-oriented experiential learning, with at least 3 years in roles with a progressive increase in responsibility
  • Master’s degree in a related field with theoretical and practical knowledge of student and career development theory and practice
  • Proven skill in creating successful career development or career exploration experiences for students
  • Experience analyzing and communicating qualitative and quantitative career and program outcomes data
  • Demonstrated ability to lead strategic planning and implementation, and manage budgets
  • Experience supervising and developing full-time staff
  • Ability to foster collaborations with institutional and external partners and work effectively with campus leaders
  • Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in all aspects of managing the career center and promoting access and support for all UVM students
  • Familiarity with common career development technological solutions (e.g., Handshake, Navigate, Graduway, Skill Survey, O*Net, etc.)

Applications must include:

  • Resume
  • Names and contact information for three references
  • Cover letter outlining experience, interest in the position, and evidence of commitment to student career development within a framework of diversity, equity and inclusion
