Job Description
Montgomery College, Rockville Campus, Engineering & Computer Science department, has need for a part-time Sr. Instructional Assistant, position #S03879. If you enjoy working with students, assisting them with laboratory tools and experiment preparations, and supporting the faculty then this is the job for you! The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 4:10 PM – 9:00 PM. This is a bargaining, non-exempt, grade 25 position. For non-exempt positions, you are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College.

Job Summary:
Under supervision and/or direction, incumbents of this class maintain assigned instructional laboratory and support and coordinate the daily operations and activities. The work involves set-up and organizing work areas for classroom instruction, and coordinating with and providing instructional assistance services to faculty to ensure laboratory exercises demonstrate learning, scientific, and technical principles to support classroom instruction.
Incumbents assist in providing technical assistance to students and faculty performing research and accessing instructional resources. Incumbents plan activities, assess inventory and maintain supplies and materials, maintain the facility, check/maintain equipment, and assist with guiding students regarding proper use of equipment. An incumbent follows specific guidelines developed by faculty/supervisor in providing instructional support in the laboratory and the completed work is reviewed for adherence to the guidelines and accuracy of the information provided.
Contacts are primarily with administrators, faculty, staff, and students to set-up and maintain laboratories and support instructional objectives.

Duties include but are not limited to:
- Assemble or break down all laboratory materials for assigned courses as well as demonstration materials for these courses at the beginning and end of each class period Re-shelve excess or return used equipment and carts to designated locations.
- Consult with faculty and staff to ensure what is needed is provided and gather information for future course work
- Provide assistance to students and faculty
- Repair, replace or restock equipment and components as needed and check efficiency and segregate units as needed on loan and return
- Learn how the equipment works in the department innovation center and assist/monitor students’ group when they are using the equipment.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or any combination of education and training providing understanding of the field.
- Minimum of two years of experience in a laboratory appropriate to the position assignment, setting up and maintaining appropriate materials and equipment, preferably in an academic instructional laboratory.
- Knowledge of the methods, procedures, principles, practices, and techniques of assigned subject area laboratory work, tools, equipment and materials, and hazard/safety precautions.
- Knowledge of laboratory procedures, instructional technology, equipment and educational materials employed in assigned instructional laboratory, and administrative practices and procedures, including obtaining materials and record keeping.
- Skill in problem solving.
- Knowledge of and ability to use office applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, etc., and internet and Windows-based applications.
- Skill and ability to operate and perform necessary maintenance on laboratory equipment.
- Skill in problem solving and mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to organize work and to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to work effectively with others.
