Job Description:

The Assistant Director coordinates and supports programs of the Sarah Doyle Center for Women and Gender (SDC) with guidance from the Director. This position hires, trains, and supervises the center’s undergraduate student staff and supports the hiring and supervision of the Women Peer Counselors (WPCs), peer leaders who live in the residence halls. The Assistant Director coordinates SDC events and programs throughout the year, including orientation events, open houses, and programs for Women’s History Series. In addition, this position collaborates with other student centers in coordinating annual events such as the Womxn of Color Reception and International Women’s Day activities. The Assistant Director manages daily operations of the SDC, which includes 6 meeting spaces, an art gallery/creative arts space, a library with over 4,000 books and materials, and a community garden. This position collaborates on gender-related programming with the staff of the LGBTQ Center, the Brown Center for Students of Color (BCSC), the Global Brown Center for International Students, the Undocumented, First-Generation College and Low-Income Student Center (U-FLi), and the Office of Military-Affiliated Students. In addition, this position helps nurture existing connections and builds and maintains newer connections with various academic departments; with the Pembroke Center, with BWell Health Promotion; and with other units on campus to work in alignment with the mission of the Sarah Doyle Center and of Brown University.

 

The mission of the Sarah Doyle Center for Women and Gender (SDC) is to engage the campus community through a feminist praxis of activism and academics. The center provides programs, resources, and meeting space for any member of the campus community interested in examining issues around gender, especially as it intersects with other markers of identity. The Assistant Director supports the Director in facilitating the integration of the academic with the co-curricular lives of students, consults on programming for graduate students, and contributes to the center’s emphasis around feminist and intersectional analysis as well as work/life balance in the academy and beyond.

 

Education and Experience

Required:  Master’s degree or terminal professional degree (i.e., JD, MSW, etc.)

3-5 years of experience and educational training in women’s, gender, and/or sexuality studies strongly preferred.

Experience in an academic setting is strongly preferred.

Event or programming experience required.

Understanding of diversity, especially issues around gender and how gender intersects with other social identities is required.

Student supervisory experience is strongly preferred. Ability to coordinate the work of others required.

Effective oral and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills required.

Strong computer aptitude for learning new software. Problem-solving skills required. Proficiency in spreadsheets and databases required. Website development and social media management experience preferred.

Flexible enough to change and to work with interruptions; able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail required.

Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as required by the Director.

Ability to handle confidential materials in a professional manner required.

Ability to interact with students with sensitivity and privacy required.

The SDC occupies a crucial position in the history of gender issues at Brown. As such, it is important for the person in this position to appreciate the historical context of the center, as well as the continually changing definitions of gender identity and changing needs of students and others.
