Title: Coordinator of Athletics Marketing and Promotions





Position Purpose:

Bates is a highly selective liberal arts college with 31 varsity sports competing in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), among the most competitive conferences in NCAA Division III. As a key member of the College’s athletics team, the Coordinator of Athletics Marketing and Promotions works closely with students to increase the visibility of athletic contests and the Department of Athletics on campus. This includes creating previews, recaps, profiles, feature stories, and videos about student athletes. The Coordinator of Athletics Marketing and Promotions is one of the two primary departmental liaisons for the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). In supporting SAAC, this position provides significant contributions to the development of student athletes through mentorship, guidance, leadership opportunities, community building, and a commitment to social justice. The Coordinator assists in organizing all aspects of game management for home athletic events, including all football, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, field hockey, and post-season contests.



Job Duties:

Marketing and Promotions Responsibilities (40%)
  • Assist in developing a comprehensive marketing and promotions strategy to advertise athletic contests on and off campus.
  • Provide a high-quality and cutting edge game experience for the fans at athletic contests.
  • Implement and coordinate in-game promotions, competitions and musical operations for athletic contests, supervising and collaborating with student-athletes and staff
  • Highlight the achievements of student athletes, coaches, and the Department of Athletics
  • Create engaging social media and video content including previews, recaps, profiles, and videos about student athletes, coaches, athletic events, and the Department of Athletics
  • Manage and remain accountable for expense control, administration of the marketing and promotions budget, and projected fiscal year needs
  • Assist with media relations for the Department of Athletics’ 31 varsity sports internally at Bates College: schedule cards, advertising games, and planning promotions
  • Contribute daily to Department of Athletics social media accounts
  • Undertake broader-picture stories, projects, and issues as assigned
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with parents, alumni, and the community
  • Cultivate sponsorship opportunities for Bates athletics broadcasts and events, and serve as the main point of contact with external partners
  • Engage in professional development with an eye towards gaining new knowledge in the realm of current best practices and risk management
  • Other duties as assigned
Student Supervision and Leadership Responsibilities (30%)
  • Provide leadership, supervision, and development opportunities to a team of student workers and SAAC to foster personal development, professional growth, and leadership
  • Serve as one of two primary advisors to SAAC
  • Motivate students and staff to participate in an atmosphere of sportsmanship, professionalism, and respect among student athletes, coaches, and other intercollegiate athletic teams
  • Coordinate relationships between SAAC and campus partners to build strong relationships that celebrate difference and support all students in their academic and personal success at Bates
  • Demonstrate interest in the academic progress, work, and achievement of student athletes
  • Delegate administrative responsibilities appropriately among student workers reporting to the Coordinator
  • Administer annual performance evaluations for all student workers reporting to the Coordinator
Home Athletic Event Management (20%)
  • Coordinate the planning and management of home athletic events in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Athletics for Student Services including, advertising graphics, hiring/training of staff and student workers, hiring the mascot, preparing PA scripts, preparing programs, setup of venue music, playing of venue music, live stream coverage, tracking analytics, coordinating half- time events, performing as an announcer as needed, monitoring interactions with the fan base, etc.
  • Attend and help manage selected home athletic events for football, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, field hockey, and post- season contests
  • Supervise student workers assisting with game management
  • Other duties as assigned
Administrative (10%)
  • Maintain familiarity with all rules and regulations required by governing bodies such as the NCAA, ECAC and NESCAC
  • Share input for policy making and implementation with the Assistant Director of Athletics for Student Athlete Services and Director of Athletics
  • Attend all athletics department meetings
  • Engage with the Bates community through serving on committees and fostering an environment that supports an active lifestyle for all students
  • Support the mission of the Department of Athletics and Physical Education
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications:

Education

● Bachelor’s degree required.

Experience

● Experience working within a successful communications team for 1+ years, in intercollegiate athletic communications preferred.
● Fundamental understanding of basic communications strategy principles.
● Commitment to supporting students from underrepresented groups, including students from historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, first- generation-to-college students, and low-income students.
● Ability and willingness to travel (by car, air, train or bus) domestically and internationally as needed for covering athletic competition.

Skills and Knowledge

● Strong interpersonal skills with ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships with clientele such as students, staff, faculty and co-workers.
● Excellent communication (written, verbal & listening) skills.
● Excellent analytical and problem solving skills; ability to synthesize complex or diverse information.
● Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
● Strong organizational skills for successful documentation, planning and execution.
● Proficiency in data management systems and computer software (e.g., statistic tracking programs, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, social media, webcasting, WordPress, website development and maintenance, photography and video editing)
● Ability and willingness to work weekends, evenings, and other non-traditional schedules.
