Responsible for promoting the Syracuse University College of Law in a variety of communication vehicles. The Associate Director of Communications will enhance the visibility and reputation of the College of Law through media, written and spoken pieces, publications, and online sites. This work will include identifying opportunities; writing, editing, and proofreading content across multiple platforms and formats. The Associate Director will work proactively and collaboratively with external partners; and will report to the College of Law’s Director of Communications and work with the Director and the Assistant Dean of Advancement of External Affairs to develop and enhance opportunities and best practices. Qualifications
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a field related to public communications, journalism, or marketing, with a master’s degree desirable; minimum of three to five years’ experience in an entry- or mid-level public communications, journalism, or marketing position. Previous employment in higher education desirable. No specialist certificates necessary. Job Specific Qualifications
Proficiency in the following required:
  • Writing, editing, and proofreading (esp. in a University setting)
  • Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Social Media and Related Tools: Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram
  • Graphic Design: Adobe Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat Pro)
  • Web management: HTML, CSS, SEO, Analytics (Google Analytics, Google Webmaster)
  • University-sponsored tools (inc. Email Generator, Media Valet)
Responsibilities
Writing, Editing, Proofreading
  1. Write, edit, proof articles on deadline for three-part Syracuse Law magazine
  2. Produce timely news stories for COL website and social channels
  3. Work with SU News to publish relevant COL stories in SU Today for wider circulation
  4. Assist with internal communications, including executive communications, speechwriting, and mission-critical presentations (e.g., State of the College, Convocation, etc.).


Social Media Management
  1. Post and manage original content on SU Law social media sites (news stories, event photos, announcements)
  2. Work to maintain and increase reader interactions (shares, likes, comments)
  3. Stay current with social media best practices
  4. Work with faculty to increase sharing on social media

Media Relations
  1. Work closely with SU News to increase visibility of SU Law professors and institutes in national and international media
  2. Work with SU News to disseminate COL PR to specialist law media outlets
  3. Work with faculty to expand the number of COL experts commenting in the media

Communications Project Management
  1. Provide project management for monthly Dean¿s Dispatch newsletters (development, writing, editing, proofreading, dissemination)
  2. Provide general project management assistance on communications and events for Advancement, Enrollment, Student Affairs, and other COL units, as well as special faculty events (e.g., symposia)
  3. Assist Advancement team with special projects, including giving mailers, video touch points, large-scale events (Law Alumni Weekend, Orientation/Convocation, Commencement), etc.
  4. Manage COL vendors as needed (graphic designers, writers, photographers)

Communications Management for COL Institutes
  1. For Institute for Security Policy and Law: Provide general communications management (inc., website management, event support, internal communication, social media, press relations)
  2. For Innovation Law Center: Work with Project Manager to provide targeted communications assistance (inc. website management, event support, internal communication, social media, press relations)
  3. For Burton Blatt Institute: Work with Director to provide communications support to staff (inc., website management, event support, internal communication, social media, press relations)
