Primary Duties
Under general supervision, incumbent will provide a variety of medical technical support services and appropriate patient care to a diverse student population within the scope of practice as a Medical Assistant, as defined by the Medical Board of California. Incumbent is responsible for direct and indirect patient care activities and helps maintain efficient and effective workflow to ensure high-quality healthcare.

KNOWLEDGE :
Incumbent must possess:
Working knowledge of:
  • Daily clinic operations and organization ranging from patient scheduling and reception to delivery of healthcare services and processing of paperwork.
  • Aseptic techniques and requirements.
  • Uses, application, and proper operation of various medical supplies and equipment used in performing the duties described above, such as in preparing examining rooms, obtaining patient data, and assisting practitioners.
  • California laws and regulations pertaining to medical assistants.
  • Heath Insurance Portability and Accountability Act ( HIPPA ) and information security laws.
Fluency in using standard office equipment (computers, copiers, phones ) and standard office software packages such as, Microsoft Office, Excel, and Outlook and related computer software packages.

General knowledge of:
  • Anatomy and physiology appropriate to the duties assigned.
Basic knowledge and understanding of the potential hazards or complications resulting from administering medications and know how to initiate emergency procedures.

ABILITIES :
Incumbent must have the ability to:
  • Demonstrate proper techniques in administering medications in a variety of manners, including intramuscular, intradermal, or subcutaneous methods; inhalation; and sublingual.
  • Use proper techniques in performing injections and phlebotomy.
  • Use equipment required for patient care in a student health clinic.
  • Adhere to HIPAA Health Care Privacy and Security Law.
  • Quickly learn clinical assistance methods and techniques.
  • Understand and use basic medical assistance terminology to accurately and efficiently support practitioners and follow their instructions.
  • Make accurate observations and exercise correct judgment within the areas of assigned responsibility.
  • Perform clinical assistance activities accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Frequently interact with practitioners, other health center staff, and students to perform support functions that require a professional demeanor at all times.
  • Handle instruments and equipment properly.
  • Read and write English at a sufficient level to support maintaining accurate records, including medical terminology.
  • Use automated systems to enter and maintain data and prepare simple reports.
  • Be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients.
  • Perform assigned medical technical support services such as standard tests and limited procedures described above.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff.
  • Perform duties as assigned with accuracy and attention to detail.
Required Education and/or Experience
A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

While Medical Assistants are not certified, registered, or licensed in the State of California, the Medical Board of California does require that Medical Assistants complete specific types and hours of training to perform the duties outlined in their scope of practice. This training must be documented and a physician or other qualified teacher, as identified by the Medical Board of California, must certify in writing that the Medical Assistant has completed the training successfully.

California State University ( CSU )-specific requirements are as follows :
Incumbents are required to possess a certificate of completion from an accredited and approved medical assisting program through the Department of Education or Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education within the Department of Consumer Affairs. In this case, the supervising CSU physician must verify competencies. Additional Requirements for this Position

  • California State University, Chico, in accordance with CSU policy, requires that the successful candidate complete a background check (including a criminal records check, sexual offender registry check, and/or fingerprinting) prior to assuming this position. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

Incumbent/applicant will need to be able to perform the essential job functions (duties) of this position with or without reasonable accommodation. This position is required to stand or walk for approximately six hours per shift. Keyboarding and mousing is required to operate computers. Light lifting is required to transport or use medical records, instruments, and supplies. May be required to push or pull patients in wheelchairs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT :

This position will work in WCHC in offices and treatment rooms that are kept clean. The duties of this position involve direct, personal contact with patients. There may be exposure to infection, communicable diseases, and contaminated material. Infectious material hazards involve regular exposure to disease-bearing specimens, body fluids, wastes, and blood-borne pathogens. Benefits

Eligibility for standard CSU benefits is based on an appointment of half-time or more for a period exceeding six months. Employees appointed less than half-time or less than six months are not eligible for standard CSU benefits but do receive prorated sick leave and vacation.

Eligibility for Affordable Care Act ( ACA ) benefits is based on an appointment of at least three-quarter time, hired to work a minimum of 130 hours per month over the course of the appointment or works an average of 130 hours or more per month during the measurement period.
