Detailed Job Description
This position will work within a multi-disciplinary staff and report to the Director or Associate Director of Counseling and Psychological Services. The successful candidate will value a multifaceted approach involving strongly linked clinical and training efforts, consultation with the campus, mental health prevention/early intervention, multicultural values/awareness and collaborative campus connections. Counseling and Psychological Services has a growing multicultural/international population on campus. Professionals from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. In addition to the usual responsibilities of a generalist practitioner, this position requires supervision of graduate interns and active support of the training program.

Responsibilities:
Provide individual and group counseling services to a culturally diverse undergraduate and graduate student population that includes mental health needs assessments, intake evaluations, clinical interventions, treatment follow-up, and appropriate referrals. Direct clinical service may include providing community referrals, working with student families and campus community members. Direct service may occur in the counseling center main office and in embedded locations on campus.

Complete and maintain clinical documentation (including, but not limited to, needs assessments, intake evaluations, clinical progress notes, urgent care, psychiatric referrals, and risk assessments) in a thorough and timely manner.

Develop and deliver mental health outreach and education programming to various campus partners, informed by clinical practice. Establish and maintain formal liaison relationships with an academic college, campus special interest group, or other campus entity. Occasional programming and special event needs will be delivered in the evenings and on weekends. Certain recurring events, such as Student Orientation, require all staff participation.

Actively support the training program through direct supervision of a practicum or pre-doctoral intern. Maintain primary clinical responsibility of all intern duties and sign-off on all trainee documentation. Design and deliver didactic training seminars, supervision, and/or assist with the design and implementation of other related training activities. Schedule and attend regular supervision meetings and attend supervision of supervision meetings. Assist center administration in the acquisition and maintenance of training program accreditation through development of training policies, procedures and documentation.

Engage in campus committees and working groups as needed, along with seeking professional development opportunities

Perform, as assigned, other administrative responsibilities associated with counseling and consultative services including, but not limited to, participating on Counseling Center and University committees and special projects. Assist with the design and implementation of Center activities and provide leadership to selected strategic initiatives.

Required Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
  • PhD/PsyD in clinical or counseling psychology is required.
  • Clinical licensure in New York or license eligible; licensure is expected to be complete within one year.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in a dynamic mental health setting with demonstrated ability to work both independently and within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Satisfactory completion of a doctoral internship or fellowship or relevant post-degree experience
Required Skills:
  • Experience providing clinical intake assessments, short-term individual and group counseling and psychotherapy, crisis intervention, case management and consultation services with a range of clinical issues and complexity, including threat assessment and suicidality.
  • Training and experience supervising psychological interns, including oversight of clinical services and record-keeping.
  • Requires working knowledge of a broad range of evidence-based brief treatment modalities.
  • Ability to conduct thorough risk assessments in the clinical context.
  • Experience working effectively with traditionally marginalized populations.
  • Extensive knowledge of, and good judgment in the application of, complex principles of human behavior and student development theories.
  • Willingness to develop expertise working with transgender students and students on the autism spectrum.
  • Ability to develop and provide relevant consultation and educational outreach services in a higher education learning community.
  • Knowledge of and ability to develop and maintain positive professional relationships with appropriate referral sources for students.
  • Ability to work independently within a dynamic clinical and learning environment.
  • Understanding of, and compliance with, the ethical and legal issues involved in the provision of clinical services.
  • Ability to manage and maintain confidential and private information; uses confidential, sensitive and/or private records and information, protects information appropriately.
  • Ability to establish, build and maintain effective working relationships based on respect, empathy and honesty with diverse groups and individuals.
  • Effective interpersonal, written, and electronic communications skills, including the ability to convey complex information in accessible terms to diverse or multicultural audiences.
  • Experience using information technology and computerized databases.
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture, American Sign Language (ASL), or willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
