Position Summary Information

Position Summary
The Slippery Rock University Theatre Department is seeking a skilled and motivated designer to fill a full-time, tenure-track faculty position to begin Fall 2022. The department is seeking a candidate with expertise in scenic and lighting design to teach three courses each semester and design/supervise scenic and lighting designs for a four-show mainstage season. Evidence of strong artistic vision and collaborative skills required. Strong skills in CAD (computer-aided-drafting) and scenic painting required. Additional skills in sound design/technology and/or sound mixing are preferred.

The Theatre Department at SRU is a well-established undergraduate program offering BA Theatre concentrations in Design & Technology, Acting, Theatre Arts Management, and Theatre Studies, as well as a BFA Acting (with concentrations in Musical Theatre and Acting). Our department focuses on producing contemporary and new work as well as inventive adaptations of the classics.

The candidate will be expected to assume an active role in the collaborative growth and continuing success of the BA Theatre – Design & Technology program; assist in the recruitment and mentoring of students; and to advance the visibility and reputation of the department and university through professional affiliations, credentials and activities. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES :
Teaching responsibilities: 3 courses per semester. Courses may include:
Stagecraft
Scene Design
Lighting Design
Scene Painting
Drawing/Drafting/ CAD
Art of Theatre
Advanced Stagecraft
Special Topics courses as needed

Additional responsibilities:
Design and/or supervision of undergraduate student designs for a four-show mainstage season in newly-renovated performing arts center spaces (workload equivalency); collaboration with staff technical director to supervise student shop experiences; participation in professional development/creative activities; academic advisement of department students as assigned; advisement of student design work in lab space; recruitment and mentorship of students; service to the department, university and profession; affiliation/membership with relevant professional organizations (i.e. USITT, USA, ACTF, IATSE, etc.) Minimum Qualifications
MFA in a closely related theatre design field (i.e. scenery, lighting, scenography, etc.) is required. Other terminal degrees may be considered so long as the degree is highly relevant to theatre design and the applicant’s expertise and practice in scenery, lighting, scenography, and/or related areas is clear and compelling.
Demonstrated excellence in Computer-Aided-Drafting ( CAD ), Scene and Lighting Design, and ability to teach all are required.
Demonstrated skills and commitment to excellence in teaching, artistic vision, effective collaboration, collegiality, and excellent communication and organizational skills are required and essential, as is a record of working with diverse populations.
Successful performance in an interview, including a teaching session, is required. Preferred Qualifications
Skills in sound design/technology and/or sound mixing
Teaching experience and active professional affiliations/memberships
Professional theatrical design experience
