Pratt Institute invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor at the School of Information and Faculty Director of the Spatial Analysis and Visualization Initiative (SAVI) to begin for the Fall 2022 semester.

The School of Information, located at Pratt Manhattan Center, offers Masters programs in Data Analytics and Visualization, Information and Library Science, Information Experience Design and Museums and Digital Culture. We expect the faculty to primarily support curriculum and teaching in our MS in Data Analytics and Visualization program, with work complementing other programs in the school as well.

The Spatial Analysis and Visualization Initiative (SAVI Center) at Pratt Institute is a mapping and analytics research hub that untangles the complexity of data in the human context through research and design. Its many projects focus on supporting cultural arts organizations, non-profits, and government agencies in conducting data analysis and mapping, creating interactive graphics illustrating key indicators; and conducting much needed multi-day GIS training workshops for various departments in Pratt and organizations outside of Pratt.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • School of Information:

    • Teach 3 courses per academic year

    • Coordinate the Advanced Certificate in Spatial Analysis & Design

    • Develop new courses and revise existing courses in area of specialization through work with the School Curriculum Committee.

    • Develop and maintain a coherent research agenda that addresses current questions and issues in the field.

    • Within field of specialization, be an active researcher able to produce a sustained record of research and publication in peer-reviewed journals and present peer-reviewed papers at conferences on a regular basis.

    • Serve on faculty, School and Institute committees, participate in related school activities, and provide service to the profession.

    • Serve as an advisor to School of Information students.

    • Contribute to the intellectual and cultural life of the school.


  • SAVI Center

    • Set a strategic direction for the center, which can include expanding the mission of the center and connecting it with broad work of information and data visualization.

    • Foster interdisciplinary partnerships at Pratt Institute

    • Identify, write and manage grants.

    • Partner with a variety of outside organizations- New York City (NYC) and New York State (NYS) government agencies, academic partners, strategic partnerships with industry, and a wide range of nonprofits, from national advocacy groups, to local community-based planning organizations and individuals.

    • Support the continued study of geospatial analysis and visualization in School of Information concentrations and other academic curricula as needed.

    • Lead technical training workshops for Pratt faculty, students, staff and other external community organizations.


Qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate in information studies, data science, data visualization or a related field is required.

  • Teaching experience at the college level is required.

  • 3-5 years research experience in the area of special analysis and visualization.

  • Experience managing an academic research group, center, or non-profit organization.

  • Experience in research partnership development is preferred but not required.


SALARY and RANK are commensurate with qualifications and experience.
