The Department of Communication at CSUSM is seeking an assistant professor in critical/cultural studies in communication/media studies, specializing in one of the following areas: critical race theory, Indigenous studies, postcolonial/decolonial studies, women of color feminisms, and/or queer of color critique. We invite applications for this tenure-track position from scholars and scholar-activists who have an established research agenda or promise of an outstanding research record in areas of communication focused on race and ethnicity theoretically anchored by frameworks that expand on the department's mission in diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Qualified applicants will have a Ph.D. in Communication, Media Studies, or in interdisciplinary fields with extensive Communication/Media Studies expertise, teaching and/or scholarship (A.B.D. candidates will be considered) a research program leading to publication; a record of or demonstrated potential for teaching excellence; a willingness to conduct service at all levels, especially community engaged service.

We are looking for candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and possess a strong commitment to improving access to higher education for historically underrepresented students. Minimum Qualifications 

  • Ph.D. in Communication or Media Studies, (A.B.D. candidates will be considered with Ph.D. in hand by August 2022). Ph.D. in interdisciplinary fields with extensive Communication/Media Studies expertise, teaching and/or scholarship will also be considered.
  • Demonstrated teaching effectiveness at the undergraduate level.
  • Demonstrated capacity to launch and sustain a research program.
  • Have preparation and/or experience to teach: COMM 300 Communication Theory and/or COMM 402 Rhetorical Criticism; and the ability to contribute to the Media Studies curriculum.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse student body and advance the University mission as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI).

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • The successful candidate will have research expertise in one of the following areas: critical race theory, Indigenous studies, postcolonial/decolonial studies, women of color feminisms, and/or queer of color critique.
  • The demonstrated ability to engage undergraduate students to broaden perspectives on critical/cultural studies in Communication.
  • The ability to contribute to community engaged service.

Duties:

  • Develop innovative coursework in their area(s) of expertise
  • Teach elective courses in both the Communication and Media Studies Major
  • Annually: deliver one or more core courses in the Communication major specifically COMM 300 Communication Theory and/or COMM 402 Rhetorical Criticism.
  • Develop and sustain a research program that will lead to peer-reviewed publications and/or external grants
  • Engage in department, college, university, discipline, and/or community service
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with departmental colleagues to support the Department’s mission
