Position Summary:
The successful candidate will divide their time between teaching and research activities as related to precision agriculture and agricultural systems management, playing a significant role in the newly formed Department of Soil and Water Systems. The appointee will teach courses that contribute to educating students in our largest departmental undergraduate major (Agricultural Systems Management-ASM) and contribute expertise to a new precision agriculture certificate. Teaching responsibilities include introductory and upper-level courses, some with laboratory sections. Courses include an introductory freshman course, shared courses on drone use and applications, agricultural machinery and implements, and an upper-level precision agriculture course. In addition to teaching, the appointee will develop a regionally, nationally, and internationally recognized research program related to developing and improving adoption of on-farm technology and promoting long-term sustainable farming practices. Research should include remote (e.g., drone, satellite) or proximal (e.g., tractor/implement mounted) sensing of agronomic systems, as well as the synthesis and visualization of this data using analytical approaches. Focus areas may include the development of online geospatial decision support tools for increasing adaptation and resilience within the agricultural industry, improving soil health and water quality through precision management, application of technology to improve nutrient and water management. Collaborative, interdisciplinary research projects that include other researchers and extension personnel and utilize computer and data analytical expertise across campus are encouraged. On-farm research with grower collaborators and field research at any of the nine Research and Extension Centers as well as the developing Idaho Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment is encouraged. The appointee must be interested in working with growers, agricultural industries, and other researchers and have the capability of obtaining competitive awards to fund this work.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Earned Ph.D. at the time of hire in agricultural/biological engineering, soil science, agronomy, natural resource/environmental science, precision agriculture, or a closely related field.

• Ability to teach undergraduate courses in agricultural systems management, including laboratory sections involving hands-on practice.

• Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Strong understanding of current farming practices, equipment, technologies, and tillage/crop/nutrient management strategies employed in both the irrigated and dryland production agriculture industry.

• Demonstrated ability to work in interdisciplinary teams that include researchers and extension personnel. Record of competitive grant success commensurate with career level.

• Record of research activities in the area of agricultural systems management/precision agriculture commensurate with career level.

• Demonstrated experience in student mentoring and teaching commensurate with career level.

• Demonstrated record of publishing peer-reviewed documents commensurate with career level.
