The Native American Support Program (NASP) at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is accepting applications for the Academic Advising and Program Specialist position.

The Academic Advising and Program Specialist develops and implements student recruitment and retention strategies for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) and Indigenous students broadly. The position works with the AI/AN community in Illinois and surrounding states and participates in recruitment activities, pathways to enrollment, advising/educational activities, and career exploration throughout the student’s undergraduate experience. They will implement holistic educational plans for students, supporting their academic, career, and life goals. They will also implement and monitor first-year student success programming and help UIC AI/AN undergraduate students at various levels in order to increase graduation rates.

Student Recruitment Activities

  • In coordination with Admissions, coordinate recruitment visits to high schools, two-year colleges, tribal colleges and community organizations like the Chicago American Indian Community Collaborative (CAICC) and the American Indian Center - Chicago (AIC) to increase UIC presence and networking opportunities. Travel within greater Chicago will be expected.
  • Establish a network with outside communities to improve educational opportunities. Disseminate UIC information at campus open house events, local and national college fairs, and day/night/weekend events related to the recruitment of AI/AN and Indigenous students.
  • Create and participate in university activities to increase the yield of AI/AN and Indigenous students who are admitted to UIC, such as UIC orientation, Weeks of Welcome, Family Weekend, and the annual UIC Powwow.
  • Advise prospective students (undergraduate, transfer, and non-traditional students) on academic and other matters such as applying to UIC, financial aid, and scholarships.
  • Recruit AI/AN and Indigenous students.

 

Student Retention Activities

  • Expand and deepen holistic educational plan for students supporting their academic, career and life goals. Monitor satisfactory academic progress toward degree completion.
  • Provide advising to students regarding college policies/procedures and general academic program requirements; describe courses and prerequisites and disseminate information regarding registration procedures.
  • Provide resources to students to help them understand college culture, how universities are organized, the polices that will affect them, and how to work with faculty, staff, and administrators to address challenges.
  • Implement and monitor student success programs as well as programs designed to support the success of AI/AN and Indigenous students.
  • Design and provide presentations centered on the unique needs, challenges and opportunities for AI/AN populations. Assist students with application forms for programs, financial aid and scholarships, particularly AI/AN focused opportunities.
  • Liaise between undergraduate advising entities in academic colleges as well as other success units.
  • Create and facilitate workshops and programming that addresses AI/AN issues as well as cultural expression and invited speakers, with a focus on the UIC annual Powwow.
  • Analyze student data to determine trends on AI/AN and Indigenous student enrollment and success at UIC. Contribute to the preparation of annual reports and make recommendations for program development.
  • Develop and monitor budget for retention programs and activities.
  • Support student groups focused on AI/AN and indigenous cultural areas, such as NAISO and AISES.
  • Assist in staffing NASP office, which is in-person and student-serving. Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned, occasionally falling on weekends and outside usual business hours.

 

 

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.

Two years of experience working in an educational setting, organization serving AI/AN populations, or related field.

 Experience working in a college/university, student success program development/ administration, tribal administration, or student advising preferred.

 Experience working with AI/AN or students from historically underserved populations preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of AI/AN population sociology, history, and legal status preferred.

 Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential to maintain effective working relations with departments, employees and managers at all levels and external constituencies (parents, high schools, tribes, and other colleges/universities).

 Demonstrated ability to develop supportive interactions with students in one-on-one and group situations.

 Strong project management skills. Intermediate level experience using Excel, Word, PowerPoint.

Travel within Chicago and near suburbs may be required.
