Department Overview

Housing and Residence Life (HRL) at Northern Arizona University houses 7,800 students and staff in 22 campus living communities (CLCs), including traditional, suite and apartment communities. Position Overview

The Director for Campus Living Community (CLC) Staffing position plays an integral role in the shared leadership, direction, mission and foundational values of Housing and Residence Life. Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Campus Operations, and serving as a member of the department’s director leadership team, this position contributes to developing and ensuring a comprehensive and enriching campus living experience for our students and staff.

The Director for CLC Staffing provides primary leadership, direction and support for a robust and talented team of live-in staff and supervisors. Four Assistant Directors report directly to the Director, each supervising a team of full-time professional and graduate staff responsible for student staff supervision and daily operations of the campus living communities. To achieve desired outcomes supporting departmental and institutional values, the Director must lead with a deep understanding, intercultural competency, and demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Job Duties:

Staff Supervision & Development - 50%

  • Directly supervise four Assistant Directors, with indirect supervision of 17 full-time Campus Living Community (CLC) Coordinators, five CLC Graduate Assistants, and approximately 200 Community Assistants.
  • Determine and guide CLC staff priorities and where/how staff time and energy is dedicated in order to ensure support of departmental initiatives, partnerships and overall enhancement of the campus living experience.
  • Lead all CLC staffing efforts, including staff guidance for implementing inclusive, intentional and comprehensive recruitment, selection, onboarding, and training processes.
  • Collaborate with the director leadership team to create, implement and facilitate all staff departmental meetings, training and development.
  • Build strong and effective working relationships with live-in staff members; provide avenues for ongoing communication and interaction.
  • Coach, mentor, and motivate staff; define work goals and standards; evaluate individual and team performance on difficult work assignments; review completed work with complex or novel solutions.
  • Collaborate with leadership team and campus partners to guide and provide regular professional development opportunities for staff; provide support and consultation in the development and implementation of individual professional development plans.
  • Facilitate an environment that promotes education of staff and students, and engagement with colleagues around topics of equity, inclusion, diversity and social justice.
  • Provide input to employment decisions; has significant influence over performance and rewards decisions.
  • Plan and direct work, resolve conflicts, and address performance issues.
  • Work within existing standards to promote team/organization effectiveness.
  • Provide timely follow up via phone and/or email with students/parents/guardians regarding student concerns and experiences; follow up as appropriate with staff for additional student support and response.

Leadership & Stategic Planning - 25%

  • Collaborate on regular ongoing basis as member of departmental senior leadership team.
  • Contribute to HRL mission and values through participation in strategic planning, department goal setting, data/assessment efforts, and determining community staffing priorities and initiatives.
  • Participate in direct strategic visioning and planning resulting in programs and services that effectively meet the needs of residents and supports departmental and institutional goals
  • As part of Director and AD team, determine priorities for departmental community and resident engagement framework that supports the intersection of academic, career and social life for freshmen through senior/grad housing.
  • Collaborate with campus partners and HRL staff to develop and implement programs and initiatives that support student success and provide targeted resources for residents in specific campus living communities.
  • Establish goals and priorities for building inclusive communities; promote and demonstrate the department’s Commitment to Inclusive Communities by aiding in the creation of environments that value and respect individuals, and integrate an awareness and appreciation of differences.
  • Encourage staff to utilize departmental and campus resources to generate academic, career, and student engagement opportunities.
  • Stay current in higher education and student development trends and best practices.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with campus and external partners.
  • Represent the Department on various University committees and direct and serve on department committees and teams.
  • Coordinate with university management to implement innovative solutions to department issues.
  • Develop an individual professional development plan in consultation with the Associate Vice President; serve as a role model relative to the professional development of full-time, graduate, and central office staff.

General Administration - 20%

  • Maintain responsibility for administering and managing department budgets, including setting priorities for budgets and monitoring and approving budget expenditures.
  • Analyze data to evaluate the efficiency of daily tasks within the departments and ensures all objectives are being met; determine outcomes and provides staff guidance on how to meet goals.
  • Manage cyclical projects and processes that support departmental initiatives and expectations.
  • Manage programmatic and student outreach efforts utilizing StarRez, Salesforce and Maxient.
  • Oversee the development and execution of protocols related to major transitional periods (i.e. fall opening/move-in, winter break/fall closing, spring opening/closing/move-out).

Other – 5%

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in related field
  • 3-5 years of management experience
  • 5-7 years of progressively responsible relevant experience in a campus housing/residence life staffing/operations, OR
  • A combination of related education, experience, and training

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Student Affairs, Administration, Counseling, or Higher Education Administration
  • Experience in supporting an intentional and comprehensive campus living experience
  • Three or more years of experience supervising full-time, professional staff
  • Experience with budget administration.
  • Experience with operational aspects of campus housing
  • Ability to apply student developmental concepts to program practices and staff development.
