Position Title Outreach Coordinator The Opportunity

The Departments of Mining Engineering, Geology and Geological Engineering, Geophysics, and Petroleum Engineering (“the Departments”) are seeking a passionate advocate to increase undergraduate enrollment in the Departments’ degree programs by executing an outreach program that focuses on accepted students and undeclared undergraduates, especially including women and other underrepresented groups, and by contributing to building an inclusive CSM community. The Coordinator will lead undergraduate recruitment for the Departments by developing and executing an outreach program that focuses on accepted incoming students as well as CSM students who have not yet declared a major. Collaboration with the Departments, the Office of Admissions and the Office of Marketing/Communication will be required. Tasks include, but are not limited to, designing and executing an encompassing and dynamic program that includes outreach events to excite and inspire students about relevant careers and degree programs in the Departments, creating and updating marketing materials, coordinating student-alumni-industry interactions, meeting individually with students, and supporting other tasks that nurture a personalized approach to outreach.

Responsibilities

The Coordinator will serve to design, augment and implement plans that support enlisting first and second-year undergrad students as well as prospective undergraduate students to degrees and programs available in the Departments. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

Lead efforts for enlisting undergraduate students (20%)
  • Design and execute a dynamic program to prospective and current students, with a focus on women and underrepresented students, that educates, inspires and excites them about majoring in and having careers in the disciplines represented by the Departments.
  • Collaborate with Department Heads or their designees on metrics to measure the success of the program.
  • Seek input and feedback from internal stakeholders to develop and update development plans in order to take advantage of the wealth of knowledge and skills available on campus that center on student recruiting, advising and support.
  • Design educational materials to deliver during participation in relevant recruiting activities sponsored by internal departments across campus, including (but not limited to) Preview Mines, Discover Mines, Info Sessions, Oredigger Camp, Challenge, Launch, and other events that showcase the content and career opportunities afforded to students in degree programs offered by the Departments.
Marketing (20%)
  • Coordinate among CSM Marketing and Admissions internal stakeholders and Alumni supporters to design and update marketing materials to reflect the diversity of careers encompassed by the Departments (e.g., oil, gas, mining, geotechnical, alternative energy, environmental monitoring, space exploration). A variety of marketing strategies should be implemented.
  • Coordinate among CSM Marketing and Admissions internal stakeholders to effectively distribute marketing materials.
  • Partner with Mines Marketing office to promote programs and opportunities to current students through internal news channels and tools.
  • Develop a strong and dynamic social media presence that excites students about majoring in the degrees programs offered by the Departments.
Speaker and Event Organization and Coordination (20%)
  • Organize and participate in events where discussion of Department programs and careers is included, in coordination with internal Mines stakeholders, including but not limited to Admissions, Career Center, CASA, and student groups (e.g., Society of Women Engineers, National Society of Black Engineers).
  • Develop effective communication plans that advertise these events and maintain a public calendar of these events. Collaborate with internal stakeholders on communication strategies to promote clear and consistent messaging.
  • Connect current students, alumni, and industry leaders via these events and other opportunities, and support speakers with marketing materials/messaging.
  • Identify opportunities in the surrounding community to deliver presentations regarding program content on the degrees offered by the Departments and the potential career opportunities available through gaining a degree offered by the Departments.
Personalized Approach (20%)
  • Collaborate with the Office of Admissions, CASA, Marketing/Communications and Student Life to identify prospective outreach contacts.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for current students as well as prospective student/family inquiries and/or visits.
  • Provide personalized guidance and follow up support to prospective and current students interested in joining the Departments.
Administrative Support and Data Collection and Analysis (20%)
  • Implement all administrative or coordination tasks as required to execute the outreach and development program for the Departments.
  • Track, assess and report outreach and development activity achievements; quarterly reports to and meetings with the Department Heads of the Departments (or their designees) are required.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure students entering the Department degree programs receive robust support (e.g., advising, career planning, etc.).
The position will manage and execute these procedures and tasks with a high degree of independence in decision making and functioning.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelors’ degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • Experience in an office setting, coordinating programs among multiple stakeholders, coordinating and executing events.
  • Comfort in engaging with a diverse group of people, including senior level executives at companies, CSM faculty, staff, and students, alumni, and individuals from underrepresented groups.
  • Passion for creating a diverse and inclusive environment for all events, activities and experiences.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and writing skills, strong organizational and project management skills, strong presentation skills, and proficiency with computer software and social media platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience with and/or passion for working with students and engaging in outreach.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with a broad spectrum of geoscience disciplines and careers.
  • Deep knowledge of CSM, either as an alumni or other affiliation.
  • Significant event/programming planning skills and experience.
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity of perspective.
  • Experience in, and/or desire to have a career in outreach.

Pay Range

$46,720 - $52,926
