Position Title Cloud and Virtualization Engineer The Opportunity The Cloud and Virtualization Engineer is a member of the Infrastructure Solutions Team within the Information and Technology Solutions (ITS) Department. The position works collaboratively with ITS staff and reviews the cloud computing strategy, staying up-to-date on the new trends and issues. The position is responsible for implementing and supporting application architecture and deployment of cloud solutions, comprising of hybrid clouds and on-premise virtualized infrastructure. With a thorough understanding of cloud and virtualized architecture, this individual will develop, implement, and manage robust, secure, scalable, highly available, and dynamic solutions to drive operational efficiencies. The Cloud and Virtualization Engineer will work with security staff to ensure that the security requirements necessary to protect the University’s mission and business processes are adequately implemented, and the resulting systems supporting those missions and business processes can be properly maintained. Responsibilities
CLOUD IMPLEMENTATION AND SUPPORT
- Implement and support a cloud and virtualized infrastructure to maintain business continuity and backup and recovery capabilities
- Implement and maintain features of virtualized environment s
(OS, multi-tenancy, virtualization, orchestration, elastic
scalability)
- Analyze and optimize technical and business processes and
provide technical solutions to facilitate implementation
- Develop alternatives for private, public and hybrid cloud
models, including IaaS, PaaS, and other cloud services
- Offer guidance in infrastructure movement techniques including
bulk application and data transfers into the cloud.
- Coordinate, cooperate, and interact with other ITS staff,
particularly front-line user support staff (e.g. desktop support,
lab support, help desk) to provide second level (tier-2) support
for campus users in their use of cloud-based and virtual
environments.
- Assist in creating documentation, standards, and policies and
ensure the
environment is following established guidelines.
- Identify, evaluate, recommend, and implement opportunities
for
automation.
- Meet with individuals or groups within the Mines community to
discuss a broad-range of technical challenges and provide technical
solutions. Solutions may range from one-off localized projects to
campus-wide initiatives that ensure that IT procedures remain
within defined regulatory framework and standards.
- Support the IT team in audits of internal controls over
compliance such as PCI DSS, NIST, and others.
- Support the risk assessment, scoping, execution, reporting,
issue management, and process improvement related to ITS portions
of audits.
- Review documents, work practices, and completed work and
identify areas where changes might be necessary for purposes of
compliance.
- Other duties as required by the needs of the program and
Mines.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering,
Information Technology, or relevant field. Additional years of
experience may be used as a substitution for degrees on a
year-per-year basis.
- 3 years' experience executing, and supporting IT cloud
solutions.
- 2 years’ experience with AWS, Azure, and VMWare vSphere
enterprise implementations
- Experience implementing and operating mission critical
technology components with HA, DR, and Business Continuity
capabilities.
- Experience working with information security policies,
controls, and practices.
- Experience with claims-based identity/authentication
(SAML/OAuth/CAS), MFA, and RBAC
- Ability to manage existing cloud-based infrastructure
components, e.g., server instances, storage, cloud networking,
etc.
- Knowledge of interactions between on-premises and cloud-based
infrastructure environments
- Knowledge of information assurance (IA) principles and
organizational requirements to protect confidentiality, integrity,
availability, authenticity, and non-repudiation of information and
data.
- Intermediate knowledge of network protocols (e.g., Transmission
Critical Protocol/Internet Protocol [TCP/IP], User Datagram
Protocol [UDP], Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol [DHCP], etc.),
and network services (e.g., DNS (Domain Name System), HTTP,
etc.).
- Knowledge of cyber defense policies, procedures, and
regulations; processes for reporting network security related
incidents.
- Knowledge of information security architecture principles;
network security architecture concepts, including topology,
protocols, components, and principles (e.g., application of
defense-in-depth).
Education and Experience:
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering,
Information Technology, or relevant field.
- 5+ years of experience spanning at least two IT disciplines,
including technical architecture, network management, application
development, middleware, database management or operations.
- Cloud experience in a solution architecture or engineering role
using service and hosting solutions, such as private/public cloud
IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS platforms
- Experience working in a research or academic environment
preferred
- Cloud certification (s)
- AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate
- VMware Certified Professional - Data Center Virtualization

Pay Range
$92,200 - $102,200
Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
