Position Title Teaching Faculty - Department of Humanities and Social Sciences - Rhetoric and Composition The Opportunity

The Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences Department (HASS) at the Colorado School of Mines is looking for a non-tenure-track Teaching Assistant Professor who can teach Composition and Rhetoric or a related field. Teaching faculty at Colorado School of Mines fully participate in department and university governance and have opportunities for promotion.

The successful candidate will teach required HASS courses (primarily HASS 100 Nature and Human Values, a first-year writing course focused on environmental and engineering ethics) and elective courses in Communication, Technical Writing, Rhetorical Approaches, Rhetorical Analysis, and more, depending on the particular expertise of the candidate. Candidates with expertise in the following areas are highly encouraged to apply: Composition and Rhetoric, Communication Studies, and Technical Writing. Candidates should be prepared to develop innovative classes using a variety of delivery methods. We are particularly interested in candidates with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching first-year writing.

Communication skills are central to almost every element of Mines students’ professional lives, from making proposals, writing reports, to working on teams, so a faculty member who brings expertise in this area will have the broadest impact on the Mines mission.

Responsibilities • Teach and develop Composition and Rhetoric courses (primarily HASS 100 Nature and Human Values) and/or Communication and Technical Writing courses.
• Engage students through innovative instruction.
• Participate in department- and university-wide curriculum development.
• Engage in service to Mines, including membership on institutional and departmental committees.
• This position will require 80% teaching with a 3-3 teaching load and 20% service.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • The candidate must hold a PhD (or equivalent terminal degree) or a Masters degree with 5 or more years professional experience in Composition and Rhetoric, Communications Studies, or Technical Writing.
  • Experience teaching Composition and Rhetoric at the university level.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. in Composition and Rhetoric, Communication Studies or a closely related or relevant field.
  • Demonstrated record of effective teaching.
  • Experience teaching in the context of STEM education.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience coordinating or administering a writing program or a first-year writing course.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences is dedicated to delivering a program of excellence in the humanities and social sciences taught by interdisciplinary faculty who reach students across the entire campus at all stages of their academic careers. HASS offers a graduate degree and several minors, is home to the Hennebach Program in the Humanities, and delivers core courses such as HASS 100 Nature and Human Values and HASS 200 Global Studies along with a diverse list of elective courses. Pay Range

Mines is offering an academic year salary of $57,000 - $63,300.

Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
