Position Title Teaching Faculty - Department of Humanities and Social Sciences - Director of Bands The Opportunity

The Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences Department (HASS) at the Colorado School of Mines is seeking a non-tenure-track Teaching Assistant Professor to be Director of Wind, Concert, Marching and Pep Bands in its Music and the Performing Arts Program. Teaching faculty at Colorado School of Mines fully participate in department and university governance and have opportunities for promotion.

The successful candidate will direct the CSM Concert, Marching and Pep Bands. These groups are comprised of non-traditional (engineering) music students. During Fall marching season duties include drill design and rehearsal, directing/attending football and basketball game performances, as well as other university-wide events involving the wind ensembles. The Director is expected to direct and develop all CSM Concert Band and Wind Ensembles, including concerts in the Fall and Spring semesters. The Director creates the budget, acquires repertoire, programs concerts and parades, establishes a pedological approach for each instrument group, and must be available for campus and community events. The Director will also teach classes in associated music areas (i.e., Beginning Piano, Music History, Music Theory, Music Composition) which are part of the larger Music and Performing Arts Program at Mines.

Responsibilities
  • Organizing and conducting Mines Concert and Athletic event performances, including supervision of pep and brass, woodwind, and drumline/percussion ensembles.
  • Work in coordination with Orchestral, Jazz, Vocal, Theatre, and the Music, Engineering and the Recording Arts (M.E.R.A) Program.
  • Establish superior performance requirements.
  • Student recruitment and retention.
  • Coordinate/create support aspects of the program including, but not limited to:
    • budget planning
    • drill (skill development)
    • show design
    • arranging
    • instrument repair and maintenance
    • instrument inventory
    • performance scheduling
    • band and ensemble travel logistics.
  • Teach courses as assigned by the Department Head, the Performing Arts Chair and in consultation with music faculty.
  • Teach in area(s) of expertise (i.e., Music Theory, Music History, Composition, and Instrumental pedagogy).
  • Coordinate with Athletics Departments, Alumni and the Mines Foundation.
  • Actively engage with secondary schools as a recruitment tool.
  • Actively engage with engineering colleagues from across campus to develop innovative projects that bridge the arts and technology.
  • Supervise senior (student) band leadership.
Minimum Qualifications
  • DMA in Wind Conducting--or closely related music field--with three years teaching experience OR a Master's Degree in Wind Conducting (or closely related field) with five years teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated record of effective teaching and wind band direction.
  • Communication skills are central to almost every element of Mines students’ professional lives, so strong communication skills are required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • DMA in Wind Conducting, or closely related or relevant music field.
  • College teaching experience
  • Experience teaching in the context of STEM and STEAM education.
  • Demonstrated instrumental experience as an independent, professional musician and/or clinician.
  • Background/expertise in Music Technology; Instrument Design/Repair; or related technical field
  • Workable keyboard skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Pay Range

Mines is offering an academic year salary of $57,000 - $63,300.

Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
