Loyola Marymount University (LMU), a top-ranked university in Los Angeles, invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the next senior vice president for student affairs.

LMU is a private Catholic university rooted in the Jesuit and Marymount traditions, grounded in a centuries-old educational mission that produces extraordinary graduates dedicated to service and social justice. LMU fosters a diverse academic community rich in intellectual engagement and real-world experience opportunities. U. S. News and World Report ranks LMU among the top five Jesuit universities in the country and in the top six private universities in California.

LMU, an R2 institution in the Carnegie classifications, enrolls an academically ambitious, multicultural, and socioeconomically diverse student body and recruits, retains, and supports a diverse faculty committed to excellence in teaching, research, scholarship, and creativity. LMU is home to seven colleges/schools with more than 6,500 undergraduates, 2,000 graduate students, and 1,100 law students who benefit from the country's top programs in film and television, business, science and engineering, creative arts, education, and the liberal arts. More than 95,000 LMU alumni live lives of meaning and purpose, demonstrating that their professional achievements are matched by an enduring commitment to improving the lives of others. LMU’s intercollegiate athletics teams compete in the NCAA Division I West Coast Conference.

The senior vice president for student affairs (SVPSA) is the executive officer charged with leading a vibrant student affairs division and providing dynamic and purposeful leadership in a university known for its excellence in transformative education. Reporting to the executive vice president/provost, the SVPSA serves as a member of the President’s Cabinet and is a key advisor to the provost and the president, especially on matters involving students and campus life. The next SVPSA will have an opportunity to build on the success and considerable strengths of the student affairs division and lead into a new era of innovation and excellence. Consistent with LMU’s distinctive Jesuit ideals of cura personalis (care for the whole person) and cura apostolica (care for the work), the SVPSA will actively promote the vision of a fully integrated student experience that combines the curricular and co-curricular dimensions of student life and enhances the LMU experience and sense of community for all students in an increasingly diverse and inclusive environment.

LMU’s student affairs division consists of the following departments which report to the SVPSA: dean of students, community of care (collaborative case management program), LMU CARES (education on university resources regarding sexual misconduct prevention), office for international students and scholars, student health services, student psychological services, parent and family programs, research and assessment, student success, Del Rey Players (student-run theatre), office of student conduct and responsibility, student media, student collegiate recovery, ethnic and intercultural services, student employment services, campus recreation and student facilities, center for service and action, student housing, and student leadership and development. The SVPSA currently has 7 direct reports and is responsible for over 115 staff members.

LMU seeks in its next SVPSA a talented leader of people and programs who thinks strategically, communicates effectively, manages resources wisely, and inspires the confidence and trust of others. Minimum qualifications include an advanced degree (doctorate preferred), substantial leadership experience in student affairs, and an understanding of the particular opportunities and challenges facing higher education in the 21st century. With a history of facilitating partnerships, driving innovation, and finding new solutions that lead to meaningful results, the ideal candidate must be forward looking and energized by the challenges of the moment and the many others that will emerge. The successful candidate will also demonstrate a passion for engaging with and advocating for students; a commitment to developing and mentoring staff at all levels; the capacity to serve as a builder of community and culture with a deep commitment to fostering an anti-racist institutional climate that supports inclusive excellence; proven experience with interdivisional collaboration, particularly with academic affairs; and an affinity for the distinctive mission and character of the university.

Review of applications will continue until the position is filled; complete applications received by February 4, 2022, will be assured full consideration. A resume with a cover letter that addresses the responsibilities and requirements outlined in the position specification may be submitted via the Spelman Johnson website at www.spelmanjohnson.com/open-positions.
