Suffolk University is delighted to announce a career opportunity as a Residence Director (RD.) This opportunity is a 12 month, full-time staff member living on campus in one of the Suffolk residence halls or apartments and has direct responsibility for student development functions and the effective administration of a residential community housing a diverse population of 330-500 students and staffed by 8-12 paraprofessional staff.

Primary/Principal Responsibilities:

Staff Supervision & Support:
Provide supervision for all staff within the building. 8-10 Resident Assistants (RA), and Office Assistants (OAs). The RD is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of these staff members and will have weekly or bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with and RAs and OAs.On-Call/Duty:
Serve in a professional on-call rotation with other Residence Directors and Graduate Assistants. While on call, the RD is responsible for responding to and addressing any crisis and/or conflicts that arise on campus. RDs are on call 24 hours per day for one week at a time. The RD will have approximately 4 weeks on call each semester.

Administrative Operations:
The Residence Director has responsibility for all administrative operations in their building and needs to manage these items on a day-to-day basis. Administrative duties may include but are not limited to: Occupancy Reports, Key/Lock-out Reports, Facilities Issues, and Maintenance Requests. Bi-weekly walkthroughs of the buildings are also required.

Student Support:
A critical area of responsibility for a Residence Director is student support. Student support includes meeting with students on a one-on-one basis, mediating conflicts, and meeting with students of concern.

Departmental Responsibilities:
The Residence Director has the responsibility to support the department with departmental initiatives and tasks. This may include, but is not limited to: serving on a departmental committee, weekly staff meetings, meeting with supervisor, training, development, and RA in-service training.

Conduct / Administrative Hearings:
The Residence Director serves as an official administrative hearing officer for the university. The RD will conduct administrative hearings for policy violations that occur in the residence halls. Conduct and administrative hearing responsibilities consist of planning, scheduling, adjudicating, and following up with students. Additionally, the RD is responsible for reading all Incident Reports in their building on a day-to-day basis.

Programming:
RD is responsible for all programming initiatives in their residence hall. This includes following the departmental programming model, advising staff, and evaluation. RD is also responsible for the management and advisement of a Residence Hall programming council.

Office Functions:
The Residence Director is responsible for managing all day-to-day office functions in their residence hall. Each residence hall on campus has its own office that functions in coordination with the central Residence Life & Housing office. The RD is responsible for the management of the office, supervision of staff, and mail room.

Staff Recruitment, Selection, and Training:
In coordination with the Associate Director of Residence Life & Housing, the Residence Director helps plan, implement, and assess all departmental staff recruitment, selection, and training.

Divisional responsibilities:
The Department of Residence Life & Housing supports collaboration with other officers in the division of student affairs as well as the greater university community. Each Residence Director on campus serves on a divisional committee. Additionally, there are several divisional meetings and training the RDs are required to attend each semester.

Requirements/Qualifications:

Bachelors degree, Master’s degree in College Student Development, Higher Education Administration or related field is preferred
Experience as a live-in professional or graduate assistant in a residence hall setting is preferred
Effective supervision, administrative, organizational, written, and oral communication skills
Experience in conflict resolution, mediation, and application of student development theory in a residence hall setting
Excellent decision-making skills
Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team
Must have the ability to manage multiple projects/tasks simultaneously and handle difficult situations

Position Complexities/Working Conditions:
Position must:
Live on-campus in a residence hall or apartment community.
Participate in a Residence Director on-call duty rotation providing coverage 7 days a week, 24-hours a day, including holidays for approximately 4 weeks per semester.
Work extended hours during peak times of the academic year.
Extended vacations are limited to Summer Break, Winter Break, and Spring Break.
Work evenings and occasional weekends throughout the year.
