Job Description:

Appointment: August 18, 2022

Responsibilities:

The faculty member will be expected to teach relevant undergraduate and graduate courses, conduct research, and serve on committees. Undergraduate teaching would include courses in our professional writing minor and major option, and our first-year writing program. Graduate teaching would include courses in writing studies. Additionally, the faculty member may develop new courses in their area of expertise. This position comes with the possibility of reassigned time for directing either the writing program or the writing center, depending on interest and expertise.

RANK & SALARY: Assistant Professor. Tenure-track, 9 months. Competitive salary. Negotiable, commensurate with experience. Requirements:

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition, Writing Studies, or related field required by time of appointment
Demonstrated commitment to contemporary best practices in writing studies
Two years of college-level teaching experience
Demonstrated focus on any or a combination of the following: Black, Indigenous, or Latinx rhetorics; writing program administration (first-year composition, WAC/WID, and/or writing center); professional/technical writing

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated success in teaching first-year composition to students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds with varying levels of academic preparation
Demonstrated ability to address questions of diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching and scholarship
Experience with teaching or developing interdisciplinary curricula (e.g., Black, Latinx, or Indigenous studies; interdisciplinary or cross-disciplinary writing courses)
Experience in writing program administration (first-year composition, WAC/WID, and/or writing center) or curriculum development and assessment

For a degree to be considered, it must be conferred from a regionally accredited degree-granting institution of higher education (or equivalent from an international accrediting body).


Additional Information:

THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of English has 20 faculty, approximately 70 undergraduate majors and 55 minors, and 20graduate students. The Department includes an English undergraduate major with four options (Creative Writing, Literature and Language, English Education, Professional Writing), as well as minors in Creative Writing, English, Film, and Professional Writing. The Department also houses the first-year writing program and University Writing Center and produces several student-driven publications.

THE UNIVERSITY: Since 1902, Western Illinois University has provided outstanding educational opportunities to individuals in west central Illinois and well beyond our region and state. WIU's traditional residential campus in Macomb, Illinois, is the educational, cultural and athletic center of the region, while the WIU-Quad Cities non-residential branch campus in Moline, Illinois, is the only public university in the immediate Quad Cities region.

Western is a comprehensive university offering 62 undergraduate and 41 graduate degree programs, which includes an Ed.D. in educational leadership and a Ph.D. in environmental science. With a student-to-faculty ratio of 13:1, the University's 442 full-time faculty members teach 94 percent of all undergraduate and graduate courses.

WIU-Macomb, IL: A traditional, residential four-year campus with distinctive undergraduate degrees and numerous graduate programs, including a doctorate in education, WIU-Macomb is located in the heart of west central Illinois in Macomb (population 20,000). Macomb is an Amtrak city with twice-daily service to Chicago.

WIU-Quad Cities: The only public university in the Quad Cities area, WIU-QC offers select undergraduate and graduate programs, including a doctorate in education and a doctorate in environmental studies, at its non-residential campus in Moline, IL (population 44,000).

WIU's Macomb campus is the educational, cultural and athletic center of the region. Annually, 12 major theatrical and dance productions and studio shows are performed, along with outstanding concerts, lectures, presentations, films, dance performances and more. The Gwendolyn Brooks and Casa Latina cultural centers offer programs and activities focusing on Black and Hispanic cultures, while the Women's Center promotes gender equity through education, support and advocacy. WIU's student organization for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning and ally (LGBTQ*A) community provides resources, support and programming. These cultural and resource centers promote WIU's goal of enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion through educational programming and advocacy.

The University's athletics program, based on the Macomb campus, sponsors 17 NCAA Division I intercollegiate men's and women's varsity sports. Football competes in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision through the Missouri Valley Football Conference; all other varsity sports compete at the Division I level through The Summit League.
