The General Accounting Department is seeking an Accountant II who performs routine accounting activities requiring knowledge of systems, independent judgment and an ability to respond accordingly. This role oversees activities on various accounts, analyzes past and current data and prepares expense projections and operational forecasts. They assist with the annual external audit and quarterly trustee reporting. This position is responsible for implementation of policies and procedures relating to joint venture accounting and reporting in the General Accounting department. The Accountant II generates routine and ad hoc reports and conceptualizes projects and follows through. This individual possesses strong interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Prepare journal entries, including moderately complex transactions, to ensure GAAP compliance
  • Review and analyze significant accounting transactions to ensure proper GAAP treatment which may require research of technical accounting literature
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts to sub-ledgers and resolve moderately complex discrepancies
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly financials for University managed Joint Ventures
  • Prepare annual audited financial statements of DOME and FSK, as well as unaudited monthly GAAP statements
  • Assist in preparation of annual budget of DOME and FSK
  • Review and analyze financial reporting packages and audited financial statements for joint ventures not managed by the University
  • Perform daily accounting functions including reviewing divisional journal entries to ensure proper posting in SAP
  • Prepare reconciliations of various SAP accounts and modules
  • Develop proficiency in relevant accounting and reporting pronouncements, most notably, The Not for Profit Presentation of Financial Statements Standard, Revenue Recognition Standard and Lease Accounting Standard
  • Provide excellent customer service to divisions, departments and faculty and provide information to JHU personnel in a prompt, accurate and cordial fashion
  • Execute various reports using the SAP Analysis reporting tool from the various reporting modules; such as Special Ledger, Funds Management, Controlling, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Grants Management
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance or Related field required
  • Two years of progressively responsible related work experience required
  • If Bachelor's Degree is in unrelated field, three years of progressively responsible experience is required. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula*
  • Experience with various software applications (e.g. spreadsheets, relational databases, statistical and graphic packages), to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports
  • Proficiency in advanced Excel functions, Word, PowerPoint and various other applications

* JHU Equivalency Formula:30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
