Clinical Assistant Professor and Program Director (Non-Tenure Track)
Applied Behavior Analysis – 11-Month Appointment
Truman State University
Position: A non-tenure track faculty position at the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor is available in the newly approved online program in Disability Studies and Applied Behavior Analysis. Truman State University is a top-ranked public liberal arts and sciences university. The appointment is for 11 months per year. While it is preferable that this position be based on the Truman campus in Kirksville, Missouri, candidates who can only work remotely will be considered and are also encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will lead a new program, initially housed in the Department of Education, within the School of Health Sciences and Education, composed of an eight-course graduate certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis and a larger master’s degree in Disability Studies with an emphasis in Applied Behavior Analysis. The successful candidate will serve as the director of the program and the Verified Course Sequence Coordinator for purposes of Association of Behavior Analysis International program accreditation. Specific responsibilities include:
- Day-to-day leadership of the program, including review of program applications, communicating with current and prospective students, communicating with affiliated faculty, and coordinating with the Director of Graduate Studies and Enrollment Management.
- Serving as the on-campus face of the program.
- Supervising of internships and practica, including vetting each potential supervisor, ensuring supervisors agree to Truman standards of supervision, and meeting with each supervisor-supervisee dyad in mid-semester (or once each semester for the internship) to ensure students are on track to meet requirements for fieldwork.
- Ensuring VCS accreditation paperwork is completed each year and that the program remains in good standing.
- Representing the program at meetings of the Education Department and the School of Health Sciences and Education; representing the program at meetings of faculty governance bodies as needed.
- Teaching courses in the ABA course sequence (and in supporting disability studies courses, if desired), as well as the undergraduate online course in Registered Behavior Technician training. Course load will typically include three courses per semester (fall and spring) and one course in the summer. Courses are offered in eight-week blocks, which means this position will teach no more than two courses at any given time.
- Coordinating the activities of online remote faculty teaching in the program.
- Collaborating with the newly-established Greenwood Interprofessional Autism Center at Truman to align program activities with Center goals.
Required Qualifications: This position requires a doctoral degree in Applied Behavior Analysis or a related field and a current credential as a BCBA or BCAB-D, issued by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. The position further requires:
- 3-years direct experience working with individuals diagnosed with Autism or other neurodevelopmental disorders in the capacity of a BCBA.
- Prior experience teaching in a college or university setting.
- Prior experience teaching courses with a focus on the knowledge, skills, and abilities required of credentialed BCBAs.
- Understanding of HIPPA compliance
- Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications: Candidates can further strengthen their candidacy by possessing one or more of the following:
- 5 years direct experience working with individuals diagnosed with Autism or other neurodevelopmental disorders.
- 3 years prior experience teaching in a college or university setting.
- Experience teaching online.
- Prior leadership experiences within an academic or clinical setting.
- Prior experience supervising clinical experiences (internships and practica)
- Prior teaching or scholarship in disability studies or related disciplines (outside of Applied Behavior Analysis).
- Demonstrated experience with budgets.
- Demonstrated project management skills.
Salary: Salary is commensurate with experience. Truman offers an attractive benefits package including life, health, and disability insurance. The annual contract is 11 months in duration.
Program: The Disability Studies: Applied Behavior Analysis graduate program at Truman State University strives to equip caring, committed, competent, and culturally aware individuals who possess an understanding of topics relevant to the lives of persons with disabilities, including social justice and civil rights issues, policy concerns, ethical debates, and cultural representation. The master’s embeds the coursework necessary to complete the educational requirements leading to certification as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Master’s students complete all of the coursework required of students in the Applied Behavior Analysis Graduate Certificate while also completing core coursework in Disability Studies. Students already possessing a master’s degree need only to complete the graduate certificate to move forward on their path to professional credentialing.
The special blend of coursework in this program equips students working to become behavior analysts with the understanding that disability is a constant, pervasive, and deeply misunderstood element of human existence. Students who complete this program will not only be equipped to practice behavior analysis, but will also understand development throughout the lifespan, increasing their ability to assess and develop interventions that are not only effective, but also socially significant to self-advocates and families. The program gives particular attention to mastering key skills required for licensure and putting those into practice through practicum and internship coursework.
The Center: The former Greenwood Elementary School is a treasured community building in Kirksville. Originally built in 1935, the school served elementary students in Kirksville for more than six decades. Truman bought the building in 1999 when the Kirksville School District built a new school. In the fall of 2015, Truman launched a plan to convert the building to an interprofessional center designed to provide in-depth, interdisciplinary assessment and intervention for children with autism or suspected autism as well as other neurodevelopmental disorders. The project has since received strong bipartisan support in the Missouri Assembly, and under three governors. This comprehensive health services center will be staffed with licensed professionals in addition to supervised graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in health-related, academic programs. The center, scheduled to open in August 2023 will serve as a much-needed practicum site for a number of the health-related programs. It will also provide a valuable opportunity for students to engage in “hands-on” high-impact learning experiences. (http://greenwood.truman.edu)
