Supporting research, teaching, and community outreach, the Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies focuses on the contributions of workers and labor organizations to society. The Bridges Center promotes the study of labor in all of its facets - locally, nationally, and worldwide. Our mission is to develop labor studies, broadly conceived to include working people everywhere, as a central concern in higher education. The Bridges Center coordinates the efforts of faculty members throughout the University of Washington to develop and expand labor-related components of the University's curriculum and research. We also provide encouragement and assistance to students studying work and workers via a Labor Studies minor, scholarships, research grants, event programming, and more. The Bridges Center is a meeting place where people from the academic world, the labor movement, and the community can exchange ideas and insights. We sponsor activities in the community in order to bring issues of concern to the widest possible audience.

The Bridges Center has an outstanding opportunity for a permanent, full-time (100%) Research Coordinator. Under the direction and supervision of the Center’s Director, and in partnership with the Bridges Center’s two full-time program staff, this position will develop and implement the Bridges Center’s labor research programs, including grants, undergraduate teaching, and publicity. This position requires familiarity with research practices in both academic and community/labor/policy settings.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties will include:
Research Coordination (50%)
  • Maintain knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative labor research methods; and up-to-date awareness of UW faculty expertise, publications, and on-going research projects.
  • Manage HBCLS Research Grant Programs through cultivating and soliciting applications from UW faculty and students, coordinating grant selection process, and tracking progress of awarded grants.
  • Prepare and/or summarize HBCLS-funded research for publication by the Center, digitally and in hard copy.
  • Pursue and conduct collaborative research, and possibly independent research, as appropriate.
  • Seek outside funding, including grants, as appropriate (note: this position and the HBCLS research programs are not contingent on external grant funding).

    Research Promotion and Outreach (30%)
  • Organize research-oriented networking events (e.g. colloquium, workshares, trainings), both community and campus-focused.
  • Maintain relationships with UW faculty, community stakeholders, and policymakers, and identify potential collaborative research opportunities among these constituents.
  • Maintain research sections of the HBCLS website.

    Education (20%)
  • Supervise student research projects, as appropriate.
  • Organize workshops on labor-related research practices happening in academic, labor movement and/or policy settings.
  • Organize professional development opportunities for undergraduates and graduate students, such as forums with industry contacts.

    Funding for this position is currently guaranteed for two calendar years. The position is intended to be permanent, but its continuance after two years is subject to the renewal of funding sources.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Master’s Degree in social science or other field related to Labor Studies.
  • Two years of experience in the program specialty, which may include but is not limited to experience with labor organizations and policy-related institutions.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Commitment to working with community organizations and labor unions as well as university constituencies, and to an inclusive, anti-discriminatory approach to teaching, administration, outreach, and learning.
  • Experience with and/or knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative research methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to function both independently while exercising skill and informed professional judgment, and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including demonstrated competence in preparation of correspondence, written reports and publicity material.
  • Proficiency in the use of MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe applications (Acrobat).
  • Must be highly organized and show a high level of attention to detail.

    DESIRED:
  • Background in non-academic research practice, such as with organized labor or policy research.
  • Experience working with students in an academic environment.
  • Experience leading workshops for university and community audiences.
  • Command of, or willingness to learn large mailing databases, desktop publishing, and web site development
  • Event planning and coordination experience
