Job Details

The Amherst College Department of Chemistry (https://www.amherst.edu/academiclife/departments/chemistry) invites applications for a full-time lecturer in organic chemistry, beginning July 1, 2022. Within the last decade, Amherst College has profoundly diversified its student body in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, race, and nationality. Today, 57 percent of the students receive financial aid; 45 percent of our students identify as domestic students of color; and 10 percent of our students are international students. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at teaching and mentoring this extraordinarily talented group of students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexuality, and religion.

The position requires a Ph.D. in chemistry and calls for teaching organic chemistry at the undergraduate level. Opportunities for teaching electives and interdisciplinary courses are also available. This is a purely instructional position and carries the equivalent of a three–three-course load, which includes lecturing, the teaching of laboratory and discussion sections, and holding office hours. Applicants with expertise in any sub-discipline of organic chemistry are encouraged to apply. This appointment has a three-year initial term as a lecturer and the possibility of renewal for an additional three-year term as a lecturer, which is typically followed by five-year renewable appointments as a senior lecturer. Reappointments are contingent upon positive reviews.

Applicants should submit electronically to http://apply.interfolio.com/100924 a cover letter; a curriculum vita; a statement of teaching philosophy, including philosophy of teaching a diverse student body; and the contact information for three confidential references. Review of applications will begin February 15, 2022, and will continue until the position is filled. Complete applications received by March 1, 2022, will be guaranteed full consideration. Questions may be directed to David E. Hansen, Julian H. Gibbs 1946 Professor of Chemistry, dehansen@amherst.edu.

Amherst College is an equal opportunity employer and encourages persons of all genders, persons of color, and persons with disabilities to apply. The college is committed to enriching its educational experience and its culture through the diversity of its faculty, administration, and staff.
