DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

The Philosophy Department, housed in the College of Arts and Letters, has one of the largest undergraduate philosophy programs in the California State University system. In addition to the general major, it offers major concentrations in Ethics, Politics, and Law and in Logic and Philosophy of Science. It serves the campus and its STEM disciplines through its general education offerings, and is the only department on campus to offer courses in every GE category.

JOB DUTIES:

California State University, Sacramento is primarily a teaching institution that prides itself on its diversity and its commitment as an anchor university to the state capital and the region. Candidates for this position are expected to demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence in philosophy and a commitment to balancing this priority with an active research agenda and service to the department, college, university, and regional community.

Normal teaching duties include four courses per semester at the undergraduate level in the areas of specialization and competence. Candidates should have experience or at least demonstrate a willingness to design and teach online and hybrid courses.

A successful candidate's service would include contributing to the scholarly life of the discipline, contributing to student advising and supervising undergraduate research, participating in our department's ongoing programs, contributing to our Center for Practical and Professional Ethics, and participating in the systems of shared governance of the department, college, and university.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Ph.D. in Philosophy. ABD candidates will be considered. If ABD, candidates will be required to complete the doctoral degree by August 2022.

Evidence of specialization in one or more of the following areas

History of Philosophy

Metaphysics

Evidence of teaching competence in one or more of the following areas

Indian or Chinese Philosophy

Latin American Philosophy

Philosophy of Health or Medicine

Environmental Ethics

Experience Teaching:

Students from underrepresented groups

Courses in GE and the major

Teaching, or demonstrated willingness to develop, online/hybrid courses

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Evidence of ability to contribute to one or more of the following areas:

Teaching in more than one of the listed AOCs.

The university's and department's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The university's and department's initiatives in student access, advisement, retention, and graduation.

The university's initiatives in community engagement and becoming an anchor institution.

(1) A cover letter. Candidates are also encouraged to include a link at the top of their cover letter to a personal webpage that gives some evidence of their capabilities for providing online philosophy instruction and interaction.

(2) A current curriculum vita;

(3) A statement of diversity, inclusion, and equity; Diversity statements will be reviewed to determine candidates' demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity in teaching, research, and service to their university and broader community. Candidates are encouraged to describe the following specific criteria, preferably in this order, (a) their potential and/or demonstrated ability to attract, teach and mentor undergraduates, including their experience supporting the success of a diverse student population, (b) their record on inclusive pedagogy and curriculum as evidenced by their teaching philosophy, syllabi, and methodological approaches, (c) their record, impact, or productivity on inclusive research and scholarship, and (d) their potential and/or demonstrated ability to be a conscientious, inclusive, and engaged member of the university community and the broader community beyond the university.

(4) Unofficial transcripts of all college work (official transcripts required if invited for an interview);

(5) A sample of professional written work;

(6) Statement of scholarly interest;

(7) Statement of teaching philosophy;

(8) A teaching “portfolio” including sample syllabi and a list of courses taught or developed;

(9) Evidence of “teaching effectiveness” such as, but not limited to, summaries of peer or student evaluations.
