JOB DESCRIPTION:
John Tyler Community College, becoming Brightpoint is a two-year
public institution of higher education and one of the largest of
the 23 community colleges in Virginia. With campuses in Chester and
Midlothian in the metropolitan Richmond area and at off-campus
classrooms throughout the area, John Tyler Community College,

The 12-month program director and faculty member for pharmaceutical and biomanufacturing will develop, manage, and teach open-enrollment credit and non-credit courses; provide day-to-day oversight of the program; recruit, supervise, and evaluate part-time faculty; assess program outcomes; schedule courses; maintain curricula; provide academic advising; serve on college committees; represent the program in the community; maintain strong positive relationships with external agencies; prepare students for industry jobs; and manage other duties as assigned. This position reports to the Dean of Business, Engineering and Technology and is located primarily at the College’s Chester Campus.
The individual will also provide leadership to meet the emerging workforce requirements of new and expanding pharmaceutical manufacturers in the Richmond/Petersburg region. Within the roles of teaching and providing program leadership, specific duties include but are not limited to:
- Being responsible for overall program and curriculum development.
- Developing and maintaining an industry advisory board.
- Maintaining current content, scientific, and regulatory agency knowledge related to pharmaceutical and biomanufacturing industry.
- Using sound andragogical methods to develop curriculum and engage students.
- Supporting students with advisement, hands-on training, and job placement.
- Interacting directly with industry leaders as well as production/quality managers.
- Tracking the progress of program development activities and ensuring key program milestones are achieved within agreed upon timelines.
- Maintaining the “overall picture” of the program development and providing/negotiating resolution of potential issues internally to prevent delays to program development timelines.
- Monitoring program performance and connecting short-term demands to long-term implications in alignment with supporting the pharmaceutical and biomanufacturing industry.
- Prioritizing multiple tasks while meeting deadlines; communicating the program status to stakeholders.
- Effectively balancing competing program constraints including but not limited to curriculum, schedule, funding, budget, resources, and risk to manage program success.
- Connecting program objectives to broader College goals.
- Developing and implementing program management processes and methodologies for teaching, equipment, and facility management.
KSA’S/Required Qualifications:
A master’s degree in physiology, biology, chemistry, chemical
engineering, or a related scientific field; solid record of
instructional development and teaching; minimum of two-years of
work in the pharmaceutical/biomanufacturing industry or equivalent;
scientific knowledge of pharmaceuticals and biologics including
manufacturing processes and techniques; familiarity with the drug
development process and regulatory agencies; proven ability to
quickly earn the trust of key stakeholders and to mobilize and
motivate students; strong analytical, problem solving, critical
thinking, organizational, and financial planning skills;
proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including 365; record of
effectively managing laboratory/manufacturing equipment and
assigned space; excellent communication, interpersonal team
building, training and facilitation skills; ability to balance
multiple responsibilities and priorities; and self-directed and
able to work independently. Selected candidate must also complete
and pass a criminal background check.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: A doctorate and teaching experience at a community college.
