Assistant Professor, Tenure track, Sustainable Food Systems

Arizona State University: Office of the University Provost Tempe: College of Global Futures: School of Sustainability

Tempe, Arizona

Open Date

Description

The School of Sustainability (SOS) in the College of Global Futures (CGF) at Arizona State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Sustainable Food Systems, expected to begin July 1, 2022. The hire is anticipated at the assistant professor level, although exceptional candidates at the associate and full professor levels will be considered.

Sustainable Food Systems (SFS) is a dynamic and growing field. CGF has recently launched several degree and professional programs to train the next generation of food leaders, including: BS and MS in SFS, a graduate certificate in Food Policy and Sustainability Leadership, and soon, a SFS Minor and 4+1 degree. Alongside these expanding academic tracks, the Swette Center for Sustainable Food Systems, an education and research center housed within the ASU Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory, facilitates faculty efforts to drive social progress, economic productivity, and ecosystem resilience through food system transformation. The successful candidate will have a balanced research and teaching appointment, contributing to the SFS degree programs and participating in Global Futures Laboratory and Swette Center research.

As prominently expressed by world leaders during the 2021 United Nations Food Systems Summit, social equity and racial justice are fundamental to achieving sustainable food systems. This position kicks off a series of hires at CGF to advance just, equitable, and sustainable systems. The successful candidate will have embedded equity, diversity and inclusion in their teaching, research, engagement, and service.

CGF leaders, faculty and staff embrace ASU’s mission as a comprehensive public research university, measured not by whom it excludes, but rather by whom it includes and how they succeed; advancing research and discovery of public value; and assuming fundamental responsibility for the economic, social, cultural, and overall health of the communities it serves. We support and foster a culture of inclusiveness and respect that promotes equal opportunity and diversity among CGF faculty, staff, and students and through its engagement with diverse communities within and beyond the University.

ASU is a dynamic, internationally recognized institution dedicated to interdisciplinary collaborations, rethinking university education, and integrating excellence in research, teaching, and service. ASU serves more than 150,000 students on five campuses in the Phoenix metropolitan area, one of the fastest growing urban centers in the nation, and globally through ASU Online. It has been ranked first in the US for innovation (about.asu.edu) for each of the last seven years. Most recently, ASU was named #1 in the United States and #5 globally for university efforts to achieve global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Core Duties of the Position

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to curriculum development; deliver instruction at the undergraduate and graduate level; supervise honors, master’s and doctoral students; conduct research publishable in top-tier academic journals; participate in professional and university service; develop grant proposals for external funding; and engage with society for teaching, research, and/or service in sustainability.

Minimum Qualifications

A PhD in a discipline related to the sustainability of food systems is required. Given that “food systems” is a relatively recent discipline, we recognize that competitive candidates may emerge from fields beyond food systems (e.g., ranging from soil science and agronomy to nutrition security to governance); the selection process will include close examination of candidates’ work to determine best fit with the job description.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. Experience conducting research in food systems or related fields with a corresponding publication record is required. Demonstrated teaching, teaching assistant, or instructor experience and effectiveness in creating an academic environment that is open and encouraging to all students is required. Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion is required.

Desired Qualifications

We are interested in applicants whose work in sustainability emphasizes interdisciplinarity and considers the multiple drivers, voices, and outcomes of food systems, including but not limited to: issues of ecological change, human behavior and values, policy, social justice, governance and institutions, nutrition security, human health and wellbeing, and other compelling and emerging topics. Topics of particular interest that support the academic courses in the Sustainable Food System degree programs include, but are not limited to, knowledge of US food and agriculture systems in the global context, knowledge of the natural sciences underlying food systems, and social-ecological and/or biocultural food systems entailing dynamic interactions and transformations. Successful applicants should integrate across multiple dimensions of food systems and show capacity to be versatile and innovative in approaches to research, teaching and engagement.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain an independent, innovative, and competitively funded research program in food systems that leads to improved food systems sustainability and nutrition security. The successful candidate will direct doctoral and master’s student research, advise undergraduate students, and contribute to graduate and undergraduate teaching. The successful candidate will be able to work in a multi-disciplinary environment and engage a diverse student audience across multiple learning platforms to provide exemplary teaching, research, and community engagement. Interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary innovations are appreciated and strongly encouraged. SOS is committed to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice for the successful candidate and their future students.

Salary/Benefits: Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualification and experience. Arizona State University offers an extensive benefits package.
